Most commercial modern detergents tend to be a bit on the alkaline side, with a pH of between 8 and 10; this is considered “good” for targeting routine dirt and stains, but the pH of these detergents is achieved by using harsh chemicals. Using a pH-neutral detergent is essential to protect your clothes and skin.
From my experience Tide does tend to work better. Be it all in my head or for real, but I swear my stuff comes out feeling nicer if it was washed with tide. That said - over the last few years I've been pretty much exclusively using Arm and Hammer Fragrance Free and it works fine, can't complain.
