Mix 1 part Liquid Sugar Soap to 10 parts water in an empty trigger pack for a convenient all purpose hard surface cleaner. Adjust Liquid Sugar Soap concentration to suit job.
You simply add the concentrate to a bucket of warm water and it's ready to go. A typical example would be around 150ml of sugar soap to 5 litres of water. But you can add a little more to get a stronger solution for stubborn dirt and grease.
Despite its name, sugar soap doesn't actually contain any sugar. Its powdered form just looks a bit like sugar crystals! Sugar soap's key ingredients are actually sodium phosphate, sodium carbonate and sodium silicate, though each manufacturer has their own formula.
How to Use Sugar Soap. Simply dilute the liquid or powder in warm water and wipe the affected areas with a cloth or sponge. Then, simply rinse with clean warm water, again, with a clean sponge or cloth. Allow plenty of time for the surface to dry before rubbing down and painting.
Once the entire area has been washed go over it again with clean fresh warm water, in order to rinse off the sugar soap and remove the remaining dirt or grease. Many believe liquid sugar soap to be easier to use. Whereas, if you are doing a big job it can work out cheaper to use powdered Sugar Soap.
Doing this will create a 'key' in the woodwork that will help paint to bind. Thoroughly brush down and vacuum all surfaces after sanding to remove any dust, dirt and grime. To clean the wood, use a sugar soap wipe, or a sponge, to liberally apply sugar soap across all wooden surfaces that you plan to paint.
