The two most common are 5-1/2” and 6” from the centers of the two holes. There are other combinations of spacing which are used on specialty locks, however.
Typically, deadbolts are installed 6 to 12 inches above the doorknob or lever.
Doors pre-drilled to industry standards have two bore holes, each 2 1/8th inches in width, spaced 5 1/2 inches from the center of one borehole to the center of the next borehole. Some types of interior hardware require a closer center-to-center measure, while other hardware sets require smaller boreholes.
The door backset is the distance from the edge of the door to the center of the 2-1/8-inch bore hole for the door knob, lever or deadbolt. In the United States, there are two common backsets for residential door locks: 2-3/8 inches. 2-3/4 inches.
The BHMA/ANSI has three, separate grades for deadbolts, simply labeled grades 1 through 3. Grade 1 is the highest quality, and the most dependable deadbolt you can have. Grade 3 is your average deadbolt which will provide an accepted, but minimal, level of security.
At a minimum, deadbolts should be at least 1 inch long. The longer it is, the harder the door will be to breach.
A properly installed door features a 1/8-inch gap along the latch side to allow the door to swing and function correctly. If the gap on your door exceeds this standard clearance, your door may fail to latch, leaving you vulnerable to security and privacy problems.
Most doors open by rotating on a hinge. As such, they are opened through the application of torque. To make it as easy as possible to open the door, the knobs are placed as far from the hinge as is feasible. This maximizes the lever arm, reducing the amount of force needed to open the door.
By ADA standards, the clear width of a door opening must be a minimum of 32 inches. This clear width measurement is taken between the face of the door and the stop of the frame with the door open to 90 degrees (Figure A).
An interior door is used to separate two rooms or provide privacy. The standard door measurements of an interior door are 80 inches by 36 inches. And the typical door width should be at least 24 inches, while the height should be 80 inches.
Door handles, pulls, latches, locks and other operating devices shall be installed 34 inches (864 mm) minimum and 48 inches (1219 mm) maximum above the finished floor.
According to the ADA Standards for Accessible Design, the operable parts of the door handle must be 34 inches (865 mm) minimum and 48 inches (1220 mm) maximum above the finish floor or ground.
Any horizontal deadbolt must have a throw of at least one inch to be considered adequate security. Shorter throw deadlocks are too vulnerable to frame spreading, a common burglar attack, LOCK-IN-KNOB LOCKSETS al'e also known as cylindrical locksets or key-in-knob locksets.
It's Your Choice. Ultimately, whether you choose to have your deadbolt and door lock open with the same key is your choice. There isn't necessarily a one size fits all answer. If you want to have separate keys for a door that currently uses only one key, it is easy enough for a locksmith to set it up for you.
Most door installers look for a gap in the middle of double doors between 3mm and 5mm – that's less than ¼ inch. This means the doors will swing correctly and there's no risk of them hitting one another. Any gap between doors bigger than 5mm is too much and will look out of place.
Door handles, pulls, latches, locks and other operating devices shall be installed 34 inches (864 mm) minimum and 48 inches (1219 mm) maximum above the finished floor.
To identify if you require a right-handed or left-handed lever handle, simply stand on the side of the door where the door closes towards you. If the door is hinged to the right, you require a right-handed lever handle. If the door is hinged to the left, you will need a left-handed lever handle.
In general, knobs should be placed 2 ½ to 3 inches from the edge of the upper right corner of base cabinets. It's important to keep base cabinet knobs on the upper corner or style of base cabinet so you don't have to bend down much to open your cabinets.
By keeping your door locked, you're already one step ahead. Having a deadbolt on the entrance to your home will take a standard door knob lock to the next level. Forced entry is involved in 55.7 percent of burglaries, and a deadbolt will make breaking down a door remarkably more challenging.
Adjust the screws in the hinges to fine-tune your door's alignment. If it isn't warped or misaligned, you likely need to modify or reposition the strike plate. This may involve filing the plate opening and expanding or drilling new holes in the door frame to allow full deadbolt extension.
