While Motion Alerts rely on visual notifications and remote access to the Ring app, Motion Warning adds an extra layer of awareness by delivering an audio message on-site. This audible warning can potentially act as a deterrent to intruders or provide polite notice to visitors.
The key distinction between these two features is that motion detection is the underlying technology that recognizes movement, while motion alerts are the notifications that inform users of such detections.
While a motion sensor typically refers to the actual device that detects motion, a motion detector encompasses the entire system, including sensors, alarms, and control panels. But, these days, you can use either terms to mean the same thing — a device used to sense motion for the purpose of security.
Meet 24/7 Recording — a new feature now available for select Ring Security Cameras. With 24/7 Recording, keep close to what matters most by continuously recording audio and video, day and night — not just when motion occurs. This feature requires a Ring Home Premium subscription.
Proper placement of your Ring camera is crucial for effective motion detection. If it's positioned incorrectly or obstructed by objects like trees or bushes, it may struggle to capture motion effectively. A low battery or insufficient power supply can also prevent the camera from detecting motion.
Historically, they have more false positives than other sensor types. They are only active in intervals. Pets can trigger an alarm if not configured correctly.
Passive motion sensor alarms are based on infrared technology and only observe movements by passive heat detection. Active motion sensors are based on radar technology. They work by transmitting, as well as by receiving radio waves that boomerang when hitting a moving object.
Motion can be detected by monitoring changes in: Infrared light (passive and active sensors) Visible light (video and camera systems)
The Motion Warning feature is a digital recording that notifies visitors that they have triggered motion detection and are being recorded. The recording plays through the speaker on your Ring device. It says: Hi, you are currently being recorded. You cannot adjust the volume of this recording.
That might include helium balloons, rotating fans, shiny objects, flickering lights, and curtains placed over an air vent. Any movement within your home can trigger the motion detector when your Ring Alarm is armed “away,” potentially setting off the alarm.
Ring devices detect motion events in your surroundings, triggering motion alerts and video recordings.
You won't get any notifications if you're not connected to wifi. You can check to make sure your Ring device is online by going to Device Health in the Ring app. Tap the device you want to check. Make sure your Ring Alerts, Motion Detection and Motion Alerts are toggled on (blue).
Only the owner of a Ring device can deactivate a Ring device. Open the Ring app to the main dashboard. icon on the camera preview for the device you want to access.
Quickly Switching the Motion Sensor On and Off
One of the quick tricks you can try is to quickly turn the motion sensor ON, OFF, ON to override the motion detection and make the light stay on. To go back to motion detection mode, turn the motion sensor off, wait for about 10 seconds, and then turn it on again.
Motion Detector is a feature of a video camera or a video surveillance system that generates an alarm signal when motion is detected in the camera's field of view. Depending on its design, a motion detector may have different capabilities as regards its settings and signal generation.
Vibration motion sensors detect people and objects via small vibrations caused by things like footsteps. Microwave motion sensors emit microwave pulses. Much like an active ultrasonic sensor, the microwaves bounce off objects and return to the sensor.
The lifetime is up to 15 years, depending on the sensor type, configuration, environment, and use. Please refer to the datasheet for each sensor type for more information. If you believe the sensor stopped working prematurely, please refer to our Troubleshooting guide.
Many security cameras have built-in motion detectors that trigger recording when movement is detected. If you see the camera moving or adjusting its position, it could be recording.
Security Level: Motion Detectors
Because you can place motion detectors discreetly, it also makes it more difficult for even trained burglars to detect all of your security detectors. Being able to place motion detectors around your home's interior and exterior gives them another advantage over window sensors.

These motion sensors are triggered by heat detection, and the Ring app allows you to control how large of a heat signature the device picks up. Go to the Motion Settings section of the Ring app, and open up the Zones and Range tab to adjust the sensitivity of these sensors and to select the areas you want to monitor.
Active Live View: If you access the live view feature of your Ring camera through the app, a solid blue light may appear temporarily. This confirms that the feed is actively streaming and assures users that their camera is functioning optimally.
