As opposed to inside mount when the coverings are mounted inside the window frame, outside mount is mounted on the wall above the window and directly on the trim. Because of this the blinds or shades will need to be wider than your window opening.
As long as your window frame has enough depth to mount blinds inside the opening, we almost always recommend an inside mount.
Outside Mounted Blinds & Shades Block Out More Light and Provide Full Coverage. Since outside mounted blinds and shades cover more of the window and frame than inside mount blinds, they provide more light coverage.
There are two common ways that roller blinds, romans and venetians are mounted being Face Fixed and Recess Fixed.
Inside mount refers to blinds and shades that are installed within the confines of a window frame. That means the headrail is attached flush with the top of the window frame and the window treatment is fully contained inside the four corners of the frame itself.
An inside mount simply means that the window covering fits neatly inside the window, outlining crisply the inside of the window frame and snugly fitting all around the inside. An inside mount offers the cleanest and most minimal look and can be installed as deep or as shallow as you desire.
Outside mounted blinds and shades give the flexibility of choosing almost any window covering for any situation. That is simply because the window frame doesn't matter. You just mount the brackets outside of the window frame and hang your blinds or shades so they extend past the frame.
As opposed to inside mount when the coverings are mounted inside the window frame, outside mount is mounted on the wall above the window and directly on the trim. Because of this the blinds or shades will need to be wider than your window opening.
In summary, for Venetian, roller and vertical blinds, we would recommend they be hung from within the recess. However, Roman blinds would be better suited outside the recess, as they are able to let more light enter into the room.
Outside mounting can be used on all window types, regardless of how deep or shallow they are. Outside mount blinds result in less light leakage because you can get blinds that are wider than the window glass, providing more coverage, which can affect the impact of window blinds on daylight-linked dimming.
Blinds.com recommends at least 1.5" of overlap on each side of the window for blinds and shades, and 2" of overlap on each side for solar or roller shades and vertical blinds. The extra width provides more privacy and light blockage. As always, record your measurements down to the nearest 1/8 inch.
Should blinds rest on the windowsill? Yes, for your blinds to work to greatest effect and to achieve the right visual finish, window blinds should rest on the windowsill.
Not Adding Width To Outside Mount Blinds
We recommend going at least 2" wider than the opening on either side, so 4" total. For the height, go about 3 inches above the window trim (to allow for the mounting brackets) and measure from that point down to the window sill.
Recess blinds are designed to fit snugly within the window opening itself, while exact blinds generally sit outside the window recess, overlapping slightly on either side. Measuring for exact blinds will ensure a neat fit that minimises the amount of light escaping around the sides of the blind.
If it's a yes to curtains, the Roman blind will need to be installed inside the recess, as there will be limited space outside the reveal, and you will want to avoid the curtains fouling on the blind. Fitting Roman blinds inside the recess creates a neat and tidy effect.
Choose Inside or Outside Mount Vertical Blinds
Inside mount refers to a blind that is mounted to the inside of your window frame. This type of mount is by far the most common choice. It makes for a clean, custom appearance. Note that inside mount blinds require a minimum window frame depth to install correctly.
Roman shades can be installed both inside and outside the window frame depending upon your need and the depth of your windows. Structurally we believe that soft fold and dog-ear Roman shade would make a better fit as outside mount than the inside mount.
Minimum inside mount depth is the amount of depth required to securely mount the shade/blind inside the window frame. The minimum flush mount depth is the required mount depth needed for the shade/blind to fit fully inside of the window frame, without protruding outward at all.
Like interior solars, outdoor solar shades allow a view to the outside, while providing privacy from the exterior view. Outdoor solars are also effective at keeping your enclosed spaces and your home's interior cooler.
Inside-Mounted Vertical Blinds
Window should have a minimum recessed space of 2 3/8" for inside mount. Measure the width of the window from the top of the opening to the sill in 3 places.
