Cylinder – A complete assembled barrel and shell, including pins (tumblers), springs, etc. Cylinders come in various shapes and sizes, predominately round or oval. Barrel – The part of the lock that is turned by the key. The broach or keyway is cut into the barrel to hold the key in position.
The cylinder is what holds the portion of the lock into which you insert your key. If the cylinder is removed, a standard keyway cylinder would look like a variant of the picture to the right. It may be a bit longer or shorter, and the end may look slightly different depending on the brand of lock.
Barrels are the inner part of a lock which houses the tumblers and receives the key. When the correct key is inserted into the barrel, it aligns the tumblers leaving the barrel free to rotate and open the lock.
A key cylinder helps open or close the lock. The cylinder is a cylindrical component that houses a series of spring-loaded pins. When you insert the right key for the lock, the pins are pushed into the right position.
Cylinder locks come in either Euro shape or Oval shape. Euro cylinder locks are the most popular type of lock around homes in Britain and Europe plus, come in a wide selection of sizes. Oval cylinder locks are not as popular as Euro cylinders.

Lock Cylinders
If you have a problem with the door lock, you don't always need to replace it. Most problems can be solved by replacing the lock cylinder. Lock cylinder replacement is less expensive, and only requires that the actual cylinder within the lock be replaced.
The ignition lock cylinder is supposed to last for as long as the car does, but usually this does not happen. When the ignition assembly is installed, the lock cylinder will have a bit of lubrication in it that makes turning it with a key much easier.
As a solution to this, it is possible to construct cylinder locks so that multiple locks can be operated by a single key commonly known as a “Master Key”. It's further possible to have multiple locking cylinder groups and multiple master keys all part of a suite of locking cylinders – we call this a Master Key System.
You can if you know what you are doing and have the correct tools. On many occasions all you will need is a standard Pozi or Philips screw driver. On many older locks a flat screw driver may be required.
Measure from the outside edge of the door (including furniture) to the centre of your door. This is dimension A and is called the External Size to Centre. Next, measure from the inside edge of your door (including furniture) to the centre of your door to find dimension B, the Internal Size to Centre.
To remove the old barrel, start by unscrewing the fixing bolt in the middle. Then turn the key to a slight angle to release the lock, and slide the barrel out. Slide the new barrel into position, then turn the key to lock it into place.
Unfortunately, it has never been easier to break into a property with a standard euro cylinder lock. By simply purchasing basic hand tools from any DIY store a euro lock cylinder can be snapped in just 5-10 seconds.
Since the pins are hidden inside the lock, it's fairly difficult for most people to move the plug without the correct key. But, with a lot of practice, it is possible to solve the puzzle by other means. In the next section, we'll see how a locksmith goes about picking this sort of lock.
Cylinder Locks
While these types of locks are ideal aesthetically because they can sit flush with a door and take up little in the way of room, these types of locks are, unfortunately, some of the least secure. Cylinder locks are in fact quite easily defeated.
Use pliers or a screwdriver to remove the ignition cylinder once it is loose. It is important to note that removing the ignition cylinder without a key can be a difficult and time-consuming process, and should only be attempted by experienced professionals or those with advanced mechanical skills.

Passage function locksets are types of door handles or locks usually installed on the inside of a frame and don't have keyholes, which is why they're called passage locks - there's no need for a key with these types of locks.
Deadbolt door locks are the most secure type of key lock and are commonly used on exterior house doors. Single and double cylinder locks are classified by strength from Grade 1 to Grade 3. Grade 1 is the highest and provides the best security.
