One of the coolest options for pool deck surfaces are textured acrylic coatings. A coating that's made of concrete and acrylic will absorb less heat than other materials. Texture also makes the surface feel cooler to the touch because when a person walks on it, their bare feet are exposed to less surface area.
Exotic hardwoods are becoming more popular as a pool decking material for those who prefer a natural look. Wood retains less heat than concrete and can be textured so as not to be slippery.
Mark said the ingredients in Kool Deck are secret, but its base is a mix of marble sand and white cement. The lighter the color, the cooler the surface. The pattern is key; the dips and mesas mean you don't touch the entire surface at once. It can be 20 degrees cooler than other decking.
Cool deck coatings are not a concrete pool deck paint. They are spray-applied overlays available in light colors that will help to reflect the heat. They also have an "orange peel" texture that provides air pockets to help keep the surface cooler underfoot.
Except for the darker shades, travertine pool decks are 20-30% cooler than other natural stones and concrete pavers. We suggest you select the light walnut or taupe travertine paver colors. While they will still be hot during the summer, they will hold far less heat than most of the alternatives.
Nothing is cooler
From 1962, Kool Deck is the premier heat reducing surface available for barefoot areas. No other polymer cement overlay, paver, or stone comes close.
Brick Pavers and Clay Pavers
Brick pavers, clay tiles and other pavers made from ceramic materials are extremely good at absorbing and retaining heat from the sunlight that falls on them, and this means that on an exposed pool deck, a brick surface gets uncomfortably hot.
Empty several gallons of Kool Deck from the mixer into a 5-gallon bucket. Dip the dash brush all the way to the tops of the bristles. Shake the brush loaded with Kool Deck onto the pool's deck. Continue splashing the product in all directions until you coat the entire pool deck.

This technology not only keeps your feet comfy and cool, it keeps the entire environment cooler! Yes! Cool can be applied over existing KoolDeck Surfaces!
For about $1/square foot, you can have the only pool deck paint coating on the market that keeps concrete cool on hot summer days. Cool can even be applied over existing Kool-Deck and cement-based pool deck coatings to give them a fresh appearance that either maintains or develops a cooling feature.
The Kool Deck surface should be 1/8” thick. Splash twice. The first splashing should be used to cover the deck.
If you're choosing plastic and composite decking materials, opt for light and cool shades. It will significantly reduce the temperature during hot seasons. Of course, it also applies to the outside furniture. If you have couches, chairs, and pillows, consider changing their covers to a lighter one.
Creating a Cool Pool Deck Surface is Easier Than You Think.
Simply mix one gallon of acrylic paint** (your color choice) to the kit and apply Cool™ with an ordinary 3/8″, 1/2″ or 3/4″ nap paint roller to a clean, prepared surface. Cool dries within 30 minutes. Apply a second coat. Then a clear sealer.
Kool Deck may be cooler to walk on, but can also be much more susceptible to stains compared to Spray Deck. Spray Deck is a safer option to walk on as it is less slippery and also is less likely to get damaged or stained.
While first generation composite decking did get hot in the sun, TimberTech has innovated beyond first-gen products. TimberTech capped polymer decking is engineered to be cooler to the touch, even in direct sunlight.
Kool Deck® Elite™ can easily be applied to concrete on the very first day of the concrete pour (green concrete) or to existing concrete as described below. Kool Deck® Elite™ is a colorless (white) product. Use of an entire Mortex Color-Unit™ pack is required to achieve desired color.
Pressure wash your Kool deck. Fill the washer with standard pressure washing detergent and spray the entire Kool deck using a 15- to 25-degree spray tip pointed downward at a 90-degree angle. You can rent a pressure washer from certain home supply stores if you do not own one.
These are known to last for decades with proper maintenance and regular resealing. Cool Decking – Cool decking should last for a minimum of 10 years. Freezing weather reduces the longevity of this overlay.
Travertine Pavers: Your top choice!
It's easy to love travertine pavers. Travertine is the king of pool decks. On a 90 degree summer day, you can expect travertine to remain at comfortable 108 degrees. This material is easily found in hues of white, grey, and especially yellow.
Shell stone pavers are the coolest of all, though. Pavers made from natural stone embedded with fossilized shells and coral can have a surface temperature as low as 94 degrees Fahrenheit on a 90-degree day in full sun. Adding shading to your outdoor spaces will help these pavers stay even cooler during summer.
But travertine pavers absorb the coolness of the earth beneath them, not the hot sun overhead, so they'll stay cool and comfortable even on the hottest days.
