The black substance that can come out of water filters is typically activated carbon or carbon dust. Activated carbon is commonly used in water filtration systems due to its ability to adsorb impurities, chemicals, and odors from water.
Those tiny fragments are simply granules of the activated carbon that fill the filter cartridge. They can appear when the cartridge is being activated and, occasionally, after prolonged use of the filter jug with the same filter: put simply, tiny fragments of activated carbon leak out of the filter.
Drinking water that contains carbon dust from filters, such as activated carbon, is generally not harmful in small amounts. Activated carbon is commonly used in water filtration systems to remove impurities, odors, and tastes. However, there are a few considerations to keep in mind:
It's mold. It's always damp inside the dispenser valve and if you don't use it often enough this happens. The same thing happens to my kitchen sink water dispenser. Water sits at the the top of the curve. Once a year I take it apart and soak it in soap/chlorox and clean the inside with pipe cleaners.
Are there black particles in your water? The most common cause of black particles in tap water is the disintegration of rubber materials used in plumbing fixtures. These particles float and often adhere to sinks and bathtubs and can appear sooty or greasy.

Rarely, iron and manganese show up as black particles. But more often than not, they present as black or brown slime. If you have a carbon filter, chances are that what you're seeing is carbon dust.
Although filters can be helpful in removing harmful chemicals from our water, they sometimes strip away beneficial minerals too. These include magnesium and calcium, as well as iron and manganese, which are eliminated to make water softer and prevent discolouration, respectively.
What are the black particles in my water after filtering? It's just activated carbon from the BRITA water filter.
If the particles are small black flecks they are most likely from filters that you have hooked up to your house that uses carbon filters to remove contaminants. If you do have filters and determine that this is the cause, you should change or flush your filters per your suggested manufacturer guidelines.
As long as you have followed the proper instructions to flush your new water filter with three gallons of water, you can usually drink the water right after you've finished the replacement. Check the instructions for your filter to make sure.
These particles usually aren't harmful to drink but can cause wear and tear on your appliances. A professional plumber can offer recommendations for filtering the water from the well to remove the sediment.
Visible mold: Black, green, or white specks in your water filter are surefire signs of mold. Regular filter maintenance frequency is key to preventing this. Humidity issues: If your house is particularly humid, your water filter is more prone to mold growth.

This is fine carbon particles left over from the manufacturing process. Flushing the system as outlined in the install instructions will eliminate this situation. It is recommended that 2 to 3 gallons be flushed through the filters (approx 5 min.).
Sometimes a black tint in the water may be caused by oxidising pipes or the dissolving of rubber seals in your water system. The main and most prevalent cause of this however is manganese. The black slime is oxidised manganese and the bacteria that feed off of it.
Rust or other metallic pieces can break off from the interior of the pipes and be sent up through your taps. This will likely occur only for cold water taps and is more prevalent after a period of rest for your pipes. You may need pipe repair or replacement, depending on the level of damage.
Is Carbon Dust Safe to Drink? Although the black dust floating in your water might look unappealing, it's not considered harmful.
Soak all parts of the filter in a solution of bleach and hot water for at least 10 minutes. Rinse the filter parts thoroughly with hot water to remove any residue from the bleach solution. Allow all of the parts to air-dry completely and reassemble them according to their instructions.
Mold Growth: Dark, damp places in the dispenser can grow mold. Black specks in tap water can sometimes appear due to deteriorating rubber seals in plumbing or even from sediment buildup, which can be concerning if noticed in your drinking or shower water.
