Plantation shutters with 3.5” louvers are the most popular choice amongst Acadia Shutters customers. Their medium size provides what many consider to be the ideal amount of light control and privacy.
Three-and-a-half-inch Louvers Are The Most Popular Size
Ask your installer about standard three-and-a-half-inch louvers. They are the most requested size for popular faux-wood Polywood® shutters because they are the “in-between size” and give most windows a balanced look.
This is the most commonly selected size because it is not too big, and not too small – Goldilocks would agree, they're “just right”. But of course, one size does not fit all, and there a few things to consider when deciding the best shutter louver size. 3 ½” shutter slats are the most popular choice.
Standard louvered shutters are available in 12" and 14 1/2" widths and in heights of 25", 31", 36", 39", 43", 48", 52", 55", 60", 64", 67", 72", 75", and 80".
Shutters are fitted within the recess of a window so sit flush unlike more traditional fittings such as curtains. This in turn creates blank space around and either side of the window. Because of the fact that there is more wall and floor space showing, the room looks more spacious.
Quick Answer: Shutters are a perfect solution for large windows. Not only do they offer improved control over light and privacy, but they also free up floor space inside your home. There's a style and mounting option to suit any window – and they are proven to reduce heat loss, keeping energy costs down.
The main factors to consider are materials, colour, size and style. Buyers should also factor in their budgetary limits. All these factors can make the decision of which shutters to install where very tough.
Some people prefer to match the window frame to the shutter color to get a more uniform look, while others prefer to go for similar, but not identical, shades. A clash between the frame and the shutter can look stylish, but all depends on the look your trying to achieve with your interior (bold vs calming).
64mm and 76mm slats are undoubtedly the most popular in our range and it's easy to see why. Attractive for all interiors, the panels are the perfect size for most windows offering a default compromise between large and small slat sizes.
Black or dark colors, like cobalt, can really make the shutters pop and dress up your home's exterior. Light-colored shutters that are only a few shades darker than the rest of your home create a seamless, classic look for a more traditional home.
Basswood is now the most popular wood for shutters, outpacing pine and poplar. These can be painted and stained, and are light, flexible material that makes them good for a variety of designs. However, they're not moisture resistant and they cost more than synthetic shutters.
Ask Joanna Gaines, of course. In her new design book, Homebody, Jo revealed a particularly stylish fix for this issue: Plantation shutters.
Another way to make a shutter more modern is to select a wider louver. A 3.5-inch or 4.5-inch louver allows for more light and air when they are open, offering a picturesque view to the outside.
The term “plantation shutter” originated in the American South, due to their sophisticated style and keeping plantation homes cool in the summer. For similar reasons, people in the West now refer to this window treatment as “California shutters.”
7) Materials Matter in Plantation Shutter Construction
Since it is susceptible to moisture and humidity, we don't recommend wood shutters (or faux wood) in the bathroom, attic, and garage.
Wood is stronger than poly, yet lighter in weight. This allows for greater durability, but it also means that you can have a larger panel size with wood shutters.
Double Hung: Similar to a vertical gliding window, double hung windows can open from the top or the bottom. This makes them a beautiful match for two-tiered shutters that can be opened at either or both ends.
When it comes to bedrooms, plantation shutters are an especially ideal window covering. Let's look at the features and benefits, along with some style options to consider when ordering for your bedroom shutters. Shutters add the perfect balance of style and function to any bedroom!
Many clients find that light bleed is minimal and only really noticeable if there is a direct light source outside the window so the shutter panels themselves will be sufficient and provide enough darkness in a room for an excellent nights sleep.
Up (Rounded Side Facing Out)
Blinds turned in this direction offer more privacy and light control since the convex side faces the window, blocking light or views from the outside.
