Silicone bathroom caulk tends to perform best for sealing toilets. It's water-resistant and flexible.
Silicone sealant also supports better hygiene by keeping moisture at bay. It minimizes the potential for bacteria or grime to collect in hard-to-clean spaces. Whether you choose white or clear sealant, this material protects your bathroom from leaks.
Wax Toilet Seals: Keeping with Tradition
For years, wax rings have been plumbers' go-to options for making these types of toilet repairs.
Consider using Bon Ami, Bar Keepers Friend, or The Pink Stuff, which are commercial cleaners that work well to remove toilet bowl rings.
Wax ring is the most effective option. I've seen a couple of these ones spring a leak.
While we don't recommend using Flex Seal spray for toilet repairs, we do suggest using Flex Caulk or Flex Glue. With Flex Caulk, you can create a watertight seal around the base of a toilet to help prevent leaks and give your porcelain throne a finished look.
The growth of bacteria could also be causing those ring stains. “Certain types of bacteria, such as those that thrive in hard water conditions, can contribute to the formation of stains,” Faraone explains. And the bacteria can form a biofilm in the toilet bowl, leading to discoloration and stains.
Get rid of toilet rings with magic erasers
Cut off a quarter of a magic eraser and drop it into the toilet water. Let the piece sit in your toilet overnight to work its… well, magic! Do not flush the magic eraser down the toilet ! Remove it in the morning, then flush to rinse away any residue.
Plumber's putty is best for indoor, removable seals like sink drains, while silicone is ideal for permanent, watertight applications in high-moisture or outdoor environments.
The two most common causes of a toilet leak are the flapper or fill valve. To check for these leaks, lift the tank lid and look at the back wall of the toilet tank. You will see a water line that marks the level at which water fills the tank.
Reasons to Caulk Around a Toilet
Moisture Prevention: Without caulk around the toilet base, external water can seep under the toilet, leading to floor and subfloor damage over time. This is especially important in bathrooms with wooden floors, as prolonged exposure to moisture can lead to rot and structural issues.
Reusable: Unlike wax rings, rubber gaskets can be repositioned without losing their sealing capability. Temperature-resilient: Rubber gaskets are less affected by temperature fluctuations. Easy installation: Rubber gaskets are less messy and easier to handle.
The EVO-STIK White for Life Shower & Bathroom Sealant is our top pick for its exceptional mould resistance, long-lasting white finish, and ease of application. It's reliable, versatile, and delivers professional results with minimal effort.
Once installed, a wax seal should last the life of the toilet, 20 or 30 years, without needing to be changed. There are times, though, when the wax ring needs to be replaced, such as when your toilet begins to leak around the base or starts rocking.
If the gasket or the parts of your toilet's fill valve are old and worn, they may vibrate. The vibration transfers to the armature and ball, thus causing the high-pitched sound - or in other words, a whistling toilet. The vibration stops only when the aperture closes completely.
Avoid using cleaner tabs—they often contain bleach, which is a no-no for cleaning toilet tanks because of bleach's corrosive properties. Add a cup of white distilled vinegar to the tank once a month. Leave it to sit overnight and then flush it in the morning. Check for sediment buildup and staining every month or so.
These tablets may seem like simple solutions, but they are often more trouble — and damage-causing — than they are worth. If you use drop-in toilet cleaner tablets, we recommend you change to a different method for keeping your toilet bowl clean.

A much better solution is to use some WD-40 Multi-Use Product. Most people don't know that WD-40 can solve many of their household cleaning needs quickly and easily. When cleaning a toilet bowl, WD-40 works by softening the rust and lime deposits, so they can be easily wiped away. You don't need to use much of it.
There is a spud washer inside the toilet. It is put in between the seat and the gas tank. It helps connect the two parts of the bathroom. The spud gasket is located on the backside of the toilet seat.
When you caulk the toilet base, you keep water damage out. However, you can also keep any internal leaks in. The average wax toilet ring will last about twenty to thirty years before it begins to leak. This can cause significant water damage and mold growth if not caught early.
