You can use a wall emulsion to paint ceilings, all interior wall emulsions are technically suitable for ceilings too but for the best finish, a flat matt paint on a ceiling gives the best overall look. It helps to hide any uneven areas or surface imperfections that are often highlighted by the light.
The flat sheen is good at hiding surface imperfections, such as dents, nail holes, patches and other surface flaws in new construction. It is also a good choice for ceiling painting. Flat finishes often require fewer coats than semi-gloss and gloss paints.
But the best choice will be redoing the whole thing. To fix it, use tape on the edge of the wall and ceiling to make a straight line. Now select the paint that matches the color of the wall. While painting the ceiling using ceiling paint, use a paintbrush to touch up the edges and a roller for the rest of the ceiling.
Elastomeric Paint: This type of paint is highly flexible and can bridge small cracks in walls and ceilings. It's often used for exterior surfaces where movement and expansion can cause cracking.
Generally speaking, a water-based flat finish paint is best for ceilings as it hides a multitude of sins thanks to its low light-reflecting properties. Our recommendation would be Tikkurila Anti-Reflex 2 or 'AR2' as it's commonly known.
KILZ OVER ARMOR® Textured Coating is a lightly-textured, solid color coating designed to bridge cracks, hide imperfections and give a uniform look to old, weathered wood. KILZ OVER ARMOR Textured Coating can also be used over cracked and weathered concrete. Available in a variety of “wood stain” and “concrete” colors.
Usually, patchiness in dry ceiling paint is caused by not having a 'wet edge' as you paint. This means keeping the edge of the painted area wet so that when you roll into the next section, it blends smoothly so no lines appear. The only way to even out a patchy ceiling finish is to re-paint the whole ceiling.
When painting smooth ceilings, the best strategy is to roll parallel with the main source of natural light, such as a big window, as it helps prevent roller lines. If you roll perpendicular to the dominant light source, the roller lines can form a slight shadow. The same applies when spraying.
Skim coating is a process whereby a thin layer of joint compound is applied to a wall or ceiling in order to create an even surface. It's a fairly labor-intensive process, and it requires a steady hand and a good eye for detail.
Paint designed for uneven surfaces may be sold under a range of names including elastomeric paint, high-build paint, crack-free paint or renovation paint (which is basically a filler and undercoat in one). These paints are much thicker than ordinary paints which gives them much better coverage.
Patch Small Cracks and Nail Pops with Joint Compound
Small cracks and nail pops are common in drywall ceilings. For small cracks, apply a thin layer of joint compound, smooth it out, and sand it once dry. For nail pops, reset the nail or screw, cover the area with compound, and then sand smooth after it dries.
Glossy and satin sheens are more likely to show imperfections, but some matte sheens can be challenging to clean despite being better at hiding blemishes. Choosing a more middle-ground sheen, like eggshell, could be the best solution when your goal is to hide imperfections.
Using Flat Finish Paint:
You can also apply flat paint finish on the wall as they can reduce the amount of light reflected off the wall. This also reduces the visibility of dents and dings and other drywall imperfections. Flat finishes also look bolder and classier than other glossier paints.
Simply apply a flat or matte paint over the texture for a smoother look. Another affordable choice is installing beadboard or thin plywood panels directly onto the textured surface. If you're up for it, you could also explore wallpaper or ceiling tiles, though they might be a tad pricier.
Imperfections: Despite being more durable, satin paint will show imperfections in your walls a lot more obviously than flat paint. This is down to the glossy nature, making it hard to hide things like cracks or patches. With the matte effect of flat paint, any minor imperfections are hidden away.
Paint rollers are very popular, especially when painting large areas of space like walls or ceilings. They are much quicker to use than brushes, covering the area in a fraction of the time. Plus, when used properly can create a smooth, even finish.
Ceilings should almost always be painted in a flat, matte acrylic paint. The reason for this is that: Flat paint will not reflect light or draw attention away from the wall and room furnishings. Ceilings don't receive much wear and tear, so a glossy, durable paint is not necessary.
Try to maintain a wet edge. When using a roller keep the open side towards the area just painted. Try to complete one full surface at a time. Paint in an even grid pattern from top to bottom.
Roller marks are exactly what they sound like — evidence of where the painter used the roller brush. They are often caused by a painter putting a second coat of paint on the wall before the first coat has completely dried.
