Once the plaster has fully dried, a coat of emulsion paint, acrylic paint, or oil-based paint will make your walls look amazing. Masonry paint can also be used but is best for rough walls that you'd have to sand otherwise.
Water based paint is the best type of paint to put on newly plastered walls. There are paints that bond with plaster but they can peel off, which would not be good considering your handiwork! If you are painting over plaster, do not use oil based paint since it doesn't bond with plaster.
Some older plasters can be super hard and not very porous. To gaurantee a good prime coat use the zinser brand shellac based primer. it'll get you pretty high if you're not wearing a respirator, but it bonds to anything and will help smooth out any last surface defects.
Can you paint directly over old plaster? You should only paint onto old plaster if it isn't flaking or cracked. If it is in poor condition, you should repair and/or use sandpaper before you begin painting. Any imperfections in the surface will show through even multiple layers of paint.
You must ensure that the surface is clean & sound before you apply any paint. If the plaster is previously damaged, you should ensure that you repair these before anything else.
Put simply, a mist coat is the first coat of paint that's put on bare plaster. Think of it as a base that's used to prime and seal the wall. Without the mist coat, the plaster will soak the moisture out of the paint like a sponge, causing it to crack as it dries.
Masonry, Brick, Stucco and Plaster: KILZ ORIGINAL Primer may be used on clean, dry, aged masonry surfaces that have cured (dried) at least 90 days.
how can Zinsser primers be used? Primers are truly the superheroes of surface preparation, swooping in to seal up porous surfaces like raw wood, weathered aluminium, stucco, concrete, and masonry. They even tackle bare plasterboard and spackled areas.
There are two methods to sealing the new plaster. Firstly, you can use a mist coat of white watered down emulsion. However, it is more preferable to use a primer or top coat and water down the first layer by 10%. This allows the initial coat to properly soak into the plaster aiding adhesion of the final coat.
Light sand and brush
Use a fine sandpaper and a brush to remove these blemishes but don't be too vigorous with your sanding.
Fresco is a mural painting technique that involves painting with water-based paint directly onto wet plaster so that the paint becomes an integral part of the plaster.
When it comes to painting over new plaster, you'll technically want three coats of paint – our two recommended coats plus a mist coat. A 'Contract matt' is specially designed for use on new plaster.
There's no harm in postponing decoration for a while, in fact it will give the plaster time to dry out fully and any subsequent shrinkage cracks can be filled before painting. The only downside in a kitchen area is the risk of grease spots and splashes which would resist a subsequent water based paint.
Once the plaster has been repaired, you will then want to paint. You should still apply a mist coat to the old plaster.
Old plaster walls are better off with an oil-based primer. This is because oil primers are far more superior at preventing any stains from water and other materials from showing through, which is a more commonly found problem with plaster walls.
The cheapest solution is to cover them with drywall. This will give you a nice smooth wall. You can glue the drywall directly to the plaster which will work if the current plaster is not too uneven.
KILZ MOLD & MILDEW Primer will block most medium to heavy stains including felt marker, grease, ink, pencil, tannin and water stains. It is a fast drying, low odor, very low VOC formula and is easy to clean with soap and water. Not recommended for floors.
What is the best primer to use on bare/fresh plaster? Fresh plaster doesn't actually require a specific primer; instead you can use a mist coat which acts as a primer on this type of surface. Contract matt is ideal for mist coating as it allows moisture to escape out, but doesn't allow moisture in.
Start by cleaning your surface before removing any loose paint and rust with spirits and sanding. Repair any holes or imperfections with a metal putty, wipe the surface clean and begin priming. Apply evenly on a dry and non-windy day if working outdoors.

Mix up a mist coat
New plaster is porous, so if you paint it with standard paint it will simply be absorbed by the wall. This means you'll need to apply more coats of paint, and the paint could start to peel later as it dries. To prevent this happening, you need to apply a mist coat first.
Choose a quality latex paint, like Benjamin Moore Regal Select, in any sheen and color you prefer. Eggshell and satin are popular finish choices for interior walls, but matte or gloss also work fine on plaster. Apply two coats for the best durability and color accuracy.
