1200 to 1400 Grade: Best for moderate imperfections. If your walls have noticeable cracks or bumps, this thicker option will cover them effectively. 1700 to 2000 Grade: The heavy-duty option.
If the walls are really really bad then it will need to be lined again with a 2000 grade paper but, make sure you seal the walls first with a diluted PVA mix with water once this is dry then you can start to do the cross-line the walls ready for painting. All the best.
When it comes to covering bad walls, paintable textured wallpaper is a great solution. This wallpaper features a textured (raised) design, which makes it highly effective at covering uneven surfaces and imperfections in your walls.
Lining paper has the effect of taking away any minor imperfections on the surface to be wallpapered or painted. It will give you a superior surface to work on in, for instance, older properties or walls that have been stripped previously as paper or emulsion dont mask imperfections they highlight them.
Smooth Finish: No one wants bumpy, patchy walls. PVA drywall primer smooths out inconsistencies in texture, making the final result look silky smooth.
Wall paints are the best solution if there are any little flaws over the surface of the wall. If there are flaws like spill marks or dust marks which are tough to remove, then painting can be the best way to cover them up.
For very uneven walls, a thicker grade (such as 1700 or 2000) can make a big difference, or you can opt for reinforced lining paper like Wallrock for extra durability.

You can count on high-quality peel and stick wallpaper to adhere to most surfaces and brighten up most rooms. But there are a few exceptions. Self-adhesive wallpaper will need a surface that it can effectively stick to. So if your wall isn't smooth enough, your removable wallpaper may not adhere to 100% to the surface.

2000 Grade Lining
Protects and prepares older and/or damaged plaster for paint or wallpaper. An extra thick traditional lining paper that will help to smooth out severely damaged and crumbling surfaces as well as disguising other damages such as cracked, holed and blistered plasterwork.
Prepare the walls
Although lining paper will cover minor imperfections and small cracks, you'll need to fill in any major holes or cracks on your walls before applying it. Once filled, sand down the filler so it's as flat as possible, then clean the wall down with a sugar soap solution to remove any dust and debris.
Choose 1200 or 1400 grade lining paper if your walls are moderately damaged. This lining paper is heavier than 800 – 1000, so it's also a great way to increase the durability of your wallpaper or paint.
A draft, temperatures that are too high or too low, or high humidity, can lead to blisters. Ideally, the room temperature should be between 10 and 16 degrees Celsius (50 and 60 degrees Fahrenheit). Even if you don't have a humidity meter/hygrometer, high air humidity can be indicated by a damp, cool room climate.
When applied correctly, lining paper can be painted over many times during its lifespan.
Paste the wall can be easier to hang as you apply the adhesive to the wall rather than the paper, so you don't have heavy folded paper to hang. For paste the wall lining paper, we recommend using a paint roller to apply the adhesive to the wall.
Lining paper is sold according to a grading system, which runs from 800 to 2000. These numbers determine both the thickness and weight of the paper, with 800 grade at the thinnest end of the scale.
Lining paper can be hung in both directions, vertically or horizontally (also known as cross lining). If walking across a plank of wood in between two sets of ladders doesn't sound good to you, then hanging the paper vertically is the way to go.
Wallrock Fibreliner 150 has a 'natural' uncoated finish. Heavier grades are available in either the Wallrock Fibreliner Plus 180 or Wallrock Premium 200. Wallrock Fibreliner offers two surface finishes. The outer surface of the roll offers an improved finish for either painting or over hanging with wallpaper.
Flat paint, with its velvety, matte appearance, is the best choice for hiding any wall imperfections due to its lack of shine and reflective properties.
Use a paint scraper to remove excess plaster around fittings and borders. Allow the first layer to dry and sand to remove any texture before repeating the same steps for the second layer. Once completely dry, sand the wall down with fine grit paper and you will have smooth walls, ready to be painted or papered.
Paint designed for uneven surfaces may be sold under a range of names including elastomeric paint, high-build paint, crack-free paint or renovation paint (which is basically a filler and undercoat in one). These paints are much thicker than ordinary paints which gives them much better coverage.
