Mix warm water, a few drops of Dawn, and two tablespoons of Borax in a spray bottle. Spray the mixture on the affected mortar. Scrub the area with a bristle brush. Repeat until clean.
Vinegar is safe for human health and is available for use in homes. You can use it to remove recent mortar stains from your bricks, floor tiles, and any other stained object.
If you try cleaning off the mortar while it is still wet, it just smears on the stones. An easy solution is to let the mortar dry and, at the end of the project, clean the mortar off the wall with muriatic acid. You can apply these same techniques to most masonry projects involving cement products.

Liquid detergent acts as an air-entraining admixture. During mixing, the detergent forms tiny air bubbles that are distributed throughout the mortar. These air bubbles lubricate the mortar, making it workable for long periods, even as the water evaporates.
Fortunately, you can take simple steps to remove these unwanted marks from your sandstone or limestone surface, using a cement remover acid such as phosphoric acid, trisodium phosphate, and even vinegar.

Mortar and grout smears get tougher to clean the longer they're on the surface. Cleaning before the mortar has cured – usually within seven days – may damage the joints. One exception: high-strength mortars (type “S” or compressive strength of 1800 psi and above) are best cleaned within 3-7 days.

To clean and etch concrete, mix one part muriatic acid to 10 parts water. Brush or spray the acid solution on the concrete, wait eight to 10 minutes, then neutralize the acid by spraying the surface with a mixture of one cup of ammonia in one gallon of water.
