Cabinet. Accessible Reach: If the fire extinguisher is housed in a cabinet, the cabinet must be mounted within the height range mentioned above (15 to 48 inches for unobstructed reach and 15 to 44 inches for obstructed reach).
The NFPA guidelines state that the distance from the floor to the top of the fire extinguisher to be no more than 5 feet. At the present time, raised and brailled characters or other special ADA signage are not required for fire protection cabinets.
Upper cabinets should have bottom shelves no more than 48 inches above the floor so wheelchair users can easily access them. Bottom cabinets must not exceed 34 inches from the floor, including counters. The lower height makes it easier for those with mobility issues or who use wheelchairs to reach and utilize them.
should be mounted with their carrying handles no higher than 5 feet from the floor. Larger fire extinguishers (over 40 lbs. gross weight) need to be mounted at lower heights, with their carrying handles no more than 3-1/2 feet from the floor.
Requirements for Fire Alarm Systems
The pull lever cannot require tight grasping, pinching, or twisting of the wrist. In addition, the pull lever should be within reach range or between 48 inches and 15 inches above the finish floor or ground.
Accessible Reach: If the fire extinguisher is housed in a cabinet, the cabinet must be mounted within the height range mentioned above (15 to 48 inches for unobstructed reach and 15 to 44 inches for obstructed reach).
ADA GENERAL SIGN HANGING REQUIREMENTS
Ceiling hanging – When mounting signage from the ceiling, the bottom must be at least 80 inches above the floor. Wall hanging – When installing a wall sign, a projecting sign must be at least 27 inches above the floor and only protrude 4 inches into the hallway.

Products range from the Heavy Duty Fire Extinguisher Cabinets to a simple, inexpensive plastic fire extinguisher cabinet and just about anywhere in between. The most important job of these fire extinguisher cabinets is to hold a fire extinguisher and to have it available to anyone in case of a fire.
To prevent fire extinguishers from being moved or damaged, they should be mounted on brackets or in wall cabinets with the carrying handle placed 3-1/2 to 5 feet above the floor. Larger fire extinguishers need to be mounted at lower heights with the carrying handle about 3 feet from the floor.
Extinguishers need to be installed at least 4 inches off the ground up to a maximum of 5ft.
Most authorities having jurisdiction (AHJ) will expect at least 36-inches clearance in front of the extinguisher as long as it is still visible. They “borrow” this 36-inch clearance measurement from NFPA 70-2011, Article 110.26 for electrical control panels.
If the path to the ADA-compliant fire extinguisher or pull station is unobstructed, the operable part must be placed from 15 inches to 48 inches off of the finished floor or ground. But when the wheelchair user must reach over an obstruction, these heights may change.
According to ADA compliance standards, any screen enclosure or wall mounted digital signs must not stick out more than 4 inches from a wall. Additionally, enclosures and displays must be installed at a minimum of 27-inches off the ground and a maximum of 80-inches.
Most fire alarm bells should be mounted at heights that place their tops above the floor at a height of at least 90 inches, or 7 1/2 feet, leaving at least 6 inches between the ceiling and the bell.
Accessibility Guidelines and Standards
The 2010 Standards replace DOJ's original 1991 ADA Standards (see below) and are the most current ADA standards from the federal government.
There are two big reasons why “universal height” is different from “ADA compliant”: The height requirement for “universal height” (16.5″) is lower than the height requirement for ADA compliance (17″).
The vertical sections of stairs, called stair risers, must be between 4 and 7 inches tall to be compliant with ADA guidelines.
