When selecting a loop carpet, the tighter the loops are, the more resistant to matting and crushing it will be. Loops that are twisted will help the overall durability even more. Loop carpets are typically made from nylon, wool or olefin with Wool and Nylon being the most popular and most durable.
Twist level is the number of twists in one-inch strand of carpet. Higher twists result in a more durable carpet. Lower twists can lead to the carpet unraveling.
In cut pile styles, all loops are cut. In cut-and-loop styles, some loops are cut. Pattern and texture are provided by the contrast between the uncut and cut loops—sometimes uncut loops are dominant; sometimes cut loops are. In twist styles, loops are cut and yarns are tightly twisted.
The three most common types of synthetic carpet fiber materials used to make new carpet are nylon, polyester and olefin. Acrylic carpet fibers are also sometimes used in the home, as well as wool carpet fibers. Wool carpets can either be natural or synthetic, depending on your preferences.
Textured cut pile has fibers of uneven lengths to create a rougher surface texture. Frieze carpet has long fibers and isn't recommended for high-traffic areas. In its most extreme form, it's known as shag carpet. Cable has long, thick fibers and is very comfortable underfoot.

A general rule of thumb for most residential carpet applications is to choose cushion no more than 7/16 inch thick and no less than 1/4 inch with 6 pounds per cubic feet density.
If the pile is very thick it can flatten or even matt together with continuous use and is therefore unsuitable for high-traffic areas. The maximum recommended pile height for stairs is around 1/2" (1.2 centimetres) and for most rooms around 3/4" (1.9 centimetres).
