Alexa only “speaks” WiFi (and ZigBee if you have the EchoPlus). It currently doesn't support Z-Wave, the protocol of choice for home automation thanks to its high speed and low interference with other connected devices in your home. That means you can't have a Z-Wave switch or plug speak directly to your Echo.
None of the current Amazon Alexa smart speakers have the ability to connect using Z-Wave. Echo devices control most smart home tech using Wi-Fi instead. Some recent Alexa speakers (like the 4th-gen Echo) have Zigbee controllers, but they still don't have Z-Wave.
Both types use different radio frequencies. Zigbee uses a 2.4 GHz frequency or a 915 MHz frequency, and Z-Wave uses a frequency of 908.42 MHz. A device that uses Zigbee won't be able to communicate with a device that uses Z-Wave and vice versa.
Currently, only Kwikset Z-Wave-based smart locks work with ADT, with Kwikset SmartCode 914, 916, and SmartCode 888, making the top models that are compatible with ADT Security System. That means other top Smart Lock brands like Schlage, August, and Yale are not compatible with ADT (for now).
If that's you then you'll be pleased to know that a whole host of major smart home devices, along with most of the mainstream digital audio and video services, play nicely with Control4, including Philips Hue, Nest, Sonos, Apple TV, Yale, Netflix, Amazon Music, Lutron and more.
