If you don't leave an expansion gap for vinyl flooring, the material may buckle or warp due to temperature and humidity changes.
If the proper expansion gap is not left during installation, and the planks on the sides push up against the wall, the pressure will cause planks elsewhere in the room to buckle. Buckling floors are repairable, however, they are a major inconvenience and can be tricky.
If the expansion gap is too small or nonexistent, the flooring will not have room to expand and contract with changes in temperature and humidity. This can cause the flooring to buckle, warp, or even lift up from the subfloor.
If the floor is less than 50 ft in length or width, leave at least a ¼-inch expansion gap around the entire perimeter. If the floor is between 50–85-ft, increase the expansion gap to ½-inch around the entire perimeter.
If the vinyl comes from a hot climate to a chilly one, it will shrink, and gaps will occur. If it comes from a cold environment and goes to a hotter one, it will expand. The planks and tiles will crowd each other and cup to make room. Acclimating luxury vinyl flooring enables it to adjust to its new environment.
How do I acclimate? Leave opened boxes, or lay the planks or LVT flooring pieces side by side. They stay in the room in which it's to be installed for 48 hours. Many manufacturers recommend keeping the room temperature between 66 and 80 degrees.
Vinyl needs time to settle. We recommend waiting at least 24 hours before walking on your new floors.
Your vinyl planks will be placed parallel to the focal wall or the longest wall in the room. Measure out the length and width of the room, and divide the width of the room by the width of the planks. Plan for ¼” gap along the walls to allow for expansion.
Natural causes like sunlight and heat are one major reason for bubbling vinyl flooring. As the material warms (and cools), it can expand and contract, widen and shrink, and that constant changing of size can lead to buckling.
The floor must first lay flat to stay flat. If Fiberglass Cushioned Vinyl is installed within the perimeter of the quarter round, fill in the exposed expansion gap with a permanent flexible silicone caulking.

Room humidity can vary according to the season, so it is vital that the floor is able to expand and contract. For this reason, make sure you leave an expansion gap on all sides of the floor, around pipes, thresholds and under doors.
Second, staggering increases the floor's stability by distributing the seams and joints more evenly. This is particularly important for floating vinyl plank flooring, where the planks do not adhere to the subfloor. In this case, staggering helps to prevent the flooring from separating or gapping over time.
Both luxury vinyl tile and vinyl plank flooring expand and contract when exposed to changes in weather, including temperatures. The expansion and contraction are only fractions of an inch, but this can make a difference.
Moisture. If water seeps up under the flooring from an extremely moist concrete subfloor, the adhesive can be weakened, causing buckling in the floors. During installation, run a vapor barrier under the vinyl plank flooring to help prevent buckling from moisture.
In short, vinyl flooring itself can be completely self sustainable and does not require an underlayment to function properly. Another reason underlayments may be suggested for vinyl flooring is if the vinyl flooring type is thin. When the vinyl flooring is thin, it becomes a lot easier to flex and bend.
Avoid using ammonia-based cleaning solutions. Don't use bleach as an overall vinyl floor cleaner. Keep away from highly abrasive scrubbers or detergents on vinyl. They can damage the floor, causing cracks or scratches.
If you're LVP is installed with glue, repairs should be relatively painless. Peel up your affected plank using a scraper or other tool with a thin edge. Try not to damage the corners or the surface because if lifting is your problem, you can simply glue it back down.
The most common culprit is the failure to properly acclimate the tiles, planks and/or the area in which they are installed, where peaking and curling can occur due to the resulting temperature fluctuations. The structure of the tile or plank itself can also play a part in peaking and curling.
Lay the first row of vinyl plank flooring along the wall, leaving the manufacturer-recommended amount of expansion space between the plank's edge and the wall (usually about 1/4-inch).
Subfloor Preparation:
Subfloor should be flat within a tolerance of 1/8” over a span of 4 feet. Any unevenness over 1/8” must be sanded down or filled with a floor leveler. Voids or humps in the subfloor will prevent luxury vinyl from locking properly.
The recommended expansion gap is a minimum of ¼ inch. Expert installers say that the larger the space, the larger the expansion gap should be, as the floor needs more space to expand and contract with temperature.
Vinyl flooring is more likely to expand in the summer due to higher temperatures and humidity levels. In the winter, the material tends to contract as temperatures and humidity levels decrease. It is crucial to maintain consistent indoor conditions to minimize these fluctuations.
Not all vinyl has to be glued to the floor. Heavy duty 'stay flat' vinyl doesn't shrink or lift, so you can lay it without using adhesive. If you're laying cushioned vinyl, you should glue it around the edges and at joins. Thinner, non-cushioned types need to be stuck down all over.
