Nitrogen is used for above ground growth. This is what gives plants a dark green color. Phosphorous helps plant cell division. It aids in flower and seed production and in the development of a strong root system.
Nitrogen (N) is probably the most widely recognized nutrient, known primarily for its ability to “green up” lawns. Nitrogen mainly affects vegetative growth and general health. And this is why you'll notice that many lawn fertilizers are high in nitrogen to promote leafy growth.

Nitrogen for Green, Leafy Growth
Nitrogen is the growth element that promotes green, leafy growth. As a primary component of proteins, nitrogen is part of every living cell. Therefore, this element is usually more responsible for increasing plant growth than any other nutrient.
How to spot an iron deficiency in plants. If your plants' leaves are turning pale or see-through, there might be a lack of iron in the soil. This can happen when plants need more iron than the soil has to offer. As iron deficiency continues the leaf colors will fade until their green hue is completely gone.
Identification. Slow growth and uniform yellowing of older leaves are usually the first symptoms of nitrogen (N) deficiency. Nitrogen-deficient plants produce smaller than normal fruit, leaves, and shoots and these can develop later than normal.
Chlorophyll gives plants their green color because it does not absorb the green wavelengths of white light. That particular light wavelength is reflected from the plant, so it appears green. Plants that use photosynthesis to make their own food are called autotrophs.
Identification. Symptoms of excess nitrogen include thickened and sometimes cupped leaves with atypically deep green color. Overfertilization can cause leaves to turn brown, gray, dark green, or yellow at margins and tips or overall. Affected foliage may wilt temporarily or die and drop prematurely.

The most common reason for leaves turning pale is not getting enough sunlight. You probably know that leaves are full of chlorophyll, the chemical that allows them to turn sunlight into energy, through photosynthesis. When your plant is photosynthesising happily, chlorophyll turns bright green.
First things first – don't panic when you see a yellow leaf. Your plant is not necessarily dying. But this does need to be said: A yellow leaf on a house plant is unlikely to turn green again UNLESS the yellowing is caused by a nutritional deficiency, which if rectified, could cause the green colour to return.
Removing the leaf will let the plant focus its nutrients on healthy leaves. A yellow leaf has lost its chlorophyll (pigment) and it can't turn green again even after you correct the problem. Don't worry, if the plant regains its health, it's possible that new leaves will fill in during the next growing season.
The food-making process takes place in millions of leaf cells which contain a pigment known as chlorophyll. Chlorophyll is green and there is so much of it in a grown leaf that it gives the leaf its green color.
Signs: Leaf edges and tips yellow, and mature leaves may develop brown spots or yellow-brown veins. Treatment: Add fruit and veggie rich compost to the soil, or bury citrus rinds at the base of the plant. A potassium specific fertilizer may be used as well.

These symptoms together mean that your plant is overwatered. Usually lower leaves drop first, although the whole plant may be affected. The solution = repot (to remove soaked soil) and water less, or let soil dry out and water less.
When a leaf is yellowing, let the leaf fully turn yellow before pulling it off. When a leaf is on its way out, the leaf loses all of its chlorophyll (the molecules which make the leaf green), and the plant absorbs any leftover nutrients from the yellowing leaf.
