Urine contains bacteria, so if its left long enough it can develop mould. Urine contains urea, uric acid and other compounds that can be a risk. That smell of ammonia that gets trapped inside your mattress is caused by bacteria eating away at the residue of the urine.
Urine is not going to make your mattress structurally unsound. It'll make it ugly to look at, but you'll keep sheets and a cover on it anyway. and it might make it smell. As long as you're sure it's dry, box the thing up in the mattress cover and sniff it. Can you smell the urine?
You can skip the fancy cleaning products and find what you need right in your kitchen: white vinegar and warm water. Mix it up 50/50 and use a spray bottle to apply it to your mattress. Then blot the mattress again with a towel. You might have to repeat this process for a bigger (or smellier!)
“Create a solution of two parts water and one part white vinegar,” Samson recommends, “and spray the stain until it is really wet with the solution. Give the solution about 15 minutes to set and do its magic, and then blot the area and dry up the stain.” Next, Samson recommends sprinkling baking soda on the spot.
While you are at it, sprinkle baking soda over the entire mattress and leave it uncovered for 18-24 hours. Finally, using a vacuum cleaner, clean all the dried baking soda powder and succeed in getting rid of pee from a mattress.
Cover the stain in baking soda
Cover your mattress with baking soda while the fresh urine is still soaking in. Don't worry about soaking up excess moisture with paper towels. Leave the baking soda for 5 to 10 hours to absorb the pet wee as well as its odour.
Simply create an effective cleaning solution from two kitchen ingredients—white vinegar and warm water. Create 50/50 mix, equal parts vinegar and water in a spray bottle and apply to your mattress.
That said, it's not just wetting the bed that can damage the upper layers of a mattress. Perspiration and body oils can also make their way into the top layers of your mattress, causing an overgrowth of bacteria and even lingering odor if not dealt with early and often.
Old or dried urine stains can be difficult to remove, often leaving carpet fibers permanently discolored or with an unpleasant lingering odor. The odor of old urine is due to the bacterial decomposition of the urea in the urine which continues as long as there is moisture.
In general, a mattress that is only slightly damp may dry in a few hours with good air circulation, while a mattress that is very wet may take a day or more to dry completely. It's important to be patient and allow the mattress to dry completely before using it again to avoid further damage or mold growth.
Urine can dry fairly quickly. In fact, it may virtually disappear within about two to four hours. But even if the mattress is no longer damp, the odds are good that you'll still be able to smell the presence of urine. Understanding how to get the pee smell out of a mattress starts with patience.
Letting It Sit
Time Matters: Let the baking soda sit undisturbed for at least 15 minutes. For deeper cleaning, especially if the mattress is particularly odorous or hasn't been cleaned in a while, leave it on for several hours or even overnight.
Dried urine does not support microbial growth and is thus considered safe and suitable for regular shipment and storage. This is in contrast to liquid urine samples, which must be treated as biohazardous material at all times.
There's no scientific evidence showing that urine is an attractant. Still, if the urine had the right acidity, it could technically host enough carbon dioxide to interest bed bugs.
Foams soak up liquids quickly, so all-foam beds can hold onto the smell of urine more than other mattresses. Many urine smells can be removed by making and using a simple baking soda paste. Animal urine and messes left by pets smell strongly and it's best to use specially made enzyme cleaners to remove the smell.
Make a solution of baking soda, peroxide and any dish detergent. The combination of the three is often powerful enough to drive away strong urine smells. The solutions is eight fluid ounces of peroxide, three tablespoons of baking soda, and a few drops of dish detergent.
Dawn dish soap has a million uses, including removing urine stains and odor from carpets.
Urine Can Contain Bacteria That Can Cause Infections
This is especially true if the urine isn't removed completely or the bed is not allowed to dry completely. These bacteria can cause various infections, including urinary tract infections, skin infections, and respiratory infections.
Create a mattress stain remover by combining 8 oz. hydrogen peroxide, 3 tbsp baking soda, 1 tsp dish soap in a spray bottle - this solution will remove urine stains on its own, just wait until the spots are gone.
Waterproof Pads
They have great absorbency and can hold about 4 times the amount of urine that the bladder can produce. A waterproof pad will mean less changing of the sheets as the waterproof bottom layer stops the fluid soaking through to the sheet and mattress underneath.
How long does it take to dry a mattress? It typically takes 24-48 hours for a mattress to fully dry after cleaning, depending on factors like material and degree of moisture. Proper drying is crucial to prevent mold and mildew growth.
Psychological or emotional problems: Emotional stress caused by traumatic events or disruptions in your normal routine can cause bedwetting. For example, moving to a new home, enrolling in a new school, the death of a loved one or sexual abuse may cause bedwetting episodes.
