Magnesium is a vital nutrient for healthy lawn and grass growth. It plays a crucial role in photosynthesis and helps to improve the overall health, colour, root growth and tolerance of lawn and grass to stress.
What else in the Fertiliser makes the Lawn Green? Magnesium and iron are two other elements that will add to the greenness. Magnesium is good to have in your slow-release fertiliser but iron isn't!
Magnesium is a core component of chlorophyll. Deficient lawns will show signs of yellowing and curling leaves. An Mg deficient lawn will display signs like yellowing of older leaves with leaf tips curling upward.
The excess of magnesium can also affect the soil structure, making it more compact and less porous. This can exacerbate problems with drainage or lead to anaerobic soils.
Magnesium can be applied to turf- grasses in granular and foliar forms. A foliar application using Mg sulfate at 0.1 lb. of Mg per 1,000 sq. ft.
Lightly sprinkle directly atop the grass
You can dilute Epsom salt with water and use it as a soil drench. On the contrary, you may as well employ a sprinkler system and consider working the salt into the soil without diluting it in water first.
High magnesium levels can also restrict root development and limit the uptake of essential nutrients, further compounding soil health problems.
With magnesium being a component of chlorophyll, the most obvious symptom is chlorosis (yellowing of the leaves). Or more specifically interveinal chlorosis, yellowing of the leaf with the veins remaining green.
For potted plants, Scott recommends applying the Epsom salt solution once per month. When planting a magnesium-loving plant in your garden, such as roses, Scott recommends adding a light sprinkle of Epsom salt to the soil before planting it into the garden.
Calcined magnesite (typically 80% MgO). This is the most concentrated magnesium fertiliser, but it is only slowly available in the soil.
Organic. For a long-term solution, apply a yearly mulch of home-made compost. This will conserve moisture, prevent the leaching of nutrients during heavy rainfall, and provide the soil with sufficient quantities of magnesium to keep your plants healthy.

How to get deep dark green grass? Look for fertilizer that contains a high percentage of iron — between 3 and 7 percent. Iron encourages darker green grass.
Cattle manure is a valuable source of key nutrients including nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K) sulphur (S) magnesium (Mg), and calcium (Ca) as well as certain micronutrients. Adding manure to soil impacts the chemical, biological and physical aspects of soil quality.

MAKE IT: Mix 1 teaspoon of baking soda and 2-3 drops of liquid soap in 1 liter of water. Spray the solution on the infected plants. Baking soda helps the plants become less acidic and prevents fungal growth.
The Epsom Salt protects the grass roots and helps them get stronger in order to resist weather conditions, physical damage or mowing stress. A dilution of water and Epsom Salt sprayed on the lawn monthly will do wonders to the turf.
Coffee grounds are rich in nutrients, especially nitrogen. They also have some amount of other nutrients like potassium and phosphorous. Overall, this means that adding coffee grounds to your garden can work fairly well as a fertiliser. Coffee should be spread in a thin layer, rather than being clumped in one place.
Therefore, the excessive application of Mg fertilizer would lead to the waste of Mg resources and cause Ca and K deficiencies in crop plants during practical production. The accumulation of K and Ca in various plant parts and their total accumulation per plant decreased in response to Mg excess (Figure 3).

The roots then struggle to obtain oxygen and nutrients, thereby stunting growth. Solution: Treat your plants to a nutrient-rich, well-draining soil mix, and ensure your planters are equipped with drainage holes. Regularly check soil moisture levels and tweak your watering schedule accordingly.
50 to 100 grammes of Epsom salt per square metre is recommended – on lighter soils normally add the higher quantity and on heavier soils the lower quantity. If the soil is well adjusted, it is also often sufficient to just supply it with lime, NPK or compound fertiliser containing magnesium.
Magnesium is important to turfgrass because it is needed for production of chlorophyll, which is important for photosynthesis.
