Inside your air ducts, two processes occur—contraction and expansion. As temperatures rise, your air ducts' metal parts heat up. These parts will then move around, producing a knocking sound in furnace vents. Fortunately, this is entirely normal and generally doesn't signal an issue.
Ensuring that there is sufficient space for ductwork expansion and contraction is crucial in preventing knocking noises. Inspect the ductwork for any contact with other objects and determine if there's ample room for expansion and contraction could resolve the issue.
Banging pipes when the heat comes on are caused by the thermal expansion of the pipes as they are rapidly heated from inside by steam, and later contraction as they cool. The banging usually is caused by the pipes rubbing against surrounding objects such as structural wood, pipe hangers, floor penetrations, etc.
Signs Your Water Heater Needs Repair

If the pipe is secure and simply close to a wall, joist or other pipe, consider putting a small amount of cloth, foam or felt between the wall and pipe to remove the vibration. For pipes that have come loose, it can be much more difficult, especially if they're beneath the floorboards.

Popping or Banging
When your heater turns on, noises like popping and banging are normal. There could be a few reasons why heaters make this sound, like dirty burners that need cleaning, or an excessive amount of gas inside the chambers.
Clean or Replace the Filter
The pressure will decrease once the heating cycle stops and the metal panels will 'bang' and 'pop' as they contract. To reduce the noise, clean or replace the filter as needed, and check it every month during the heating season.

Replace Your Dirty Furnace Filter
Heat causes the metal material to expand and push outward – when the cycle stops and the metal cools, it contracts and pops back into place, generating that loud banging sound that you hear indoors. In this case, the best solution is simply to change the dirty air filter.
For 1- to 2-inch filters, replace them every 1 to 3 months. For 3- to 4-inch filters, replace them every 6 to 9 months. For 5- to 6-inch filters, replace them every 9 to 12 months.
Furnace Screeching or Scraping
The blower fan may have come loose, letting the blades drag across the furnace casing. A scraping noise can also indicate other parts of the system have loosened. If you are unsure of the cause of the noise, turn the furnace off and have a technician come and take a look at it.
WHY ARE MY AIR DUCTS POPPING AND BANGING? One of the main causes for these loud noises are differences in pressure between the supply and return ducts. Another common cause is expansion and contraction due to changes in temperature.
Ideally, it shouldn't be able to move too much. Then, you should check to see if any pipes are touching things they shouldn't be, such as joists and other pipes. In these areas, apply felt between the pipe and the surface to prevent a banging or groaning noise when the heating comes on.
Common causes of a knocking noise from a heat pump include frozen outdoor coils, an unbalanced indoor fan, loose parts rattling, and compressor damage. The icing on coils forces the unit to work harder, causing vibration. Fan imbalances, loose parts, and internal compressor failures can also create knocking sounds.
Loud banging noises in the copper pipes could be caused by the boiler's thermostat set too high which is a symptom of overheating. Turn down the thermostat to see if that helps solve the issue. This is the most likely cause of banging pipes in a boiler installation.
Popping. If you hear popping sounds and you don't have a bag of popcorn in the microwave, you could be dealing with dirty furnace burners or damaged air ducts. When the burners are dirty, the buildup prevents them from igniting, which causes too much gas to build up, making a popping sound.
If you're hearing a loud banging or booming sound, this could mean your furnace has dirty burners. This is dangerous as it can delay the ignition. The delay on ignition causes gas to build up, and this causes the boom when the ignition is turned on. Your burners should be regularly cleaned to avoid this issue.
Install a water hammer arrestor: This device has an air-filled cylinder to absorb the impact of abrupt increases in water pressure. Most water hammer arrestors are installed between the shut-off valve and supply line via screw-type connectors.
You Hear a Hissing or Clanging Sound
This prevents the mixture from moving smoothly through the gas line and can cause a knocking or clanging sound. If you've started to notice a hissing or knocking sound coming from a gas pipe, it's a sure sign your gas line needs to be inspected.
Most homeowners should flush their water heaters every 6 months or so, but if you have extremely hard water, you may want to do it more often. Flushing your hot water heater could be necessary as often as every few months depending on the mineral content of your local water supply.
