When it comes to deciding on wood colors for furniture, the most timeless color is Classic Walnut. With its rich, medium-brown tones, it goes with just about any color scheme, and can seamlessly cross over from a traditional to contemporary design style (and vice versa).
There are certain colors of hardwood floor that never go out of style. Neutral shades such as light brown, gray, and black are timeless classics that will look good for years to come.
Darker Wood Tones
This may be a surprise to many, but we are expecting more dark wood tones to pop up in homes in 2023! Last year we saw a lot of DIY bleached furniture and light wood floors. This year, as dark and moody interiors are rising in popularity, we believe darker wood tones will also become more admired.
Shades of Light
Light wood finishes are trending all over the place and look exceptional when teamed up with darker colors like black and navy. We love the stylish golden wood finish on this table by Tiffany Duckenfield who paired it the stark black chairs giving it a sleek modern sophisticated look.
Greens, greys, whites and beiges are no-brainers. Warmer colours, like orange, brown, rust and red, work too, but the deeper tones of these colours work best. Here are 11 great spaces that I think got the choice of paint colours right.
Generally speaking, lighter colors work best for modern designs while darker colors complement traditional and rustic atmospheres. However, you can always mix and match your wood color to achieve the perfect design. Keep in mind that undertones also influence the feel of a room.
The most popular color to paint furniture is white. White painted furniture offers a timeless, classic look that will brighten up any room in your home and pairs well with virtually any color scheme. It also looks great with other lighter shades such as cream and beige for an elegant touch.
Along with mid-century-inspired curved furniture, the brown tones of this period are also poised to make a major comeback in 2023. This natural color—particularly its darker varieties—creates a sense of earthy stability, says Claire Druga, an interior designer based in New York City.
'What's old is new again,' agrees Etsy's 2023 collections curator, Martha Stewart, adding that 'brown furniture is alive and well'. But while dark wood appears to be on the up, Etsy has observed a 24 per cent decrease in searches for Scandinavian decor, raw or light wood (14 per cent) and beige decor (29 per cent).
1. Lighter, Brighter Wood Finishes. Wood flooring with character-rich, lighter stains shows no sign of waning in popularity, says Margaret Donaldson, founder of Margaret Donaldson Interiors. “Homeowners are primarily using white oak, but walnut is starting to surface more, especially with lighter finishes,” she says.
Muted shades of terracotta, green, yellow, and plum will be popular choices for wall paint, furniture, and home decor, predicts Bast. “These colors are warm and natural-looking and they provide a great contrast to the wood tones we have seen returning to cabinetry and furniture,” she adds.
Top designer Nate Berkus puts it this way, “Brown furniture – like traditional brown, antique furniture – is 100% back. And I think that's great because it's been undervalued for a really long time”. Berkus also goes on to talk about how he prefers a more classic look that can stand the test of time.
Overall, the chromatic trend for Autumn-Winter 2023/2024 presents great comebacks and confirmations, with a palette that ranges from red to gray, yellow to brown, and pink. Even the most delicate and subtle shades will have their space, inviting experimentation and rediscovery of classic nuances in an original key.
While darker stains feel more traditional, lighter woods definitely have a more modern feel. It's clear that natural woods are becoming the new neutral in interior design, and this design trend isn't going anywhere as people embrace cozier spaces.
If so, here's some good news. You don't have to match all the wood furniture in a room. In fact, your design may actually look much better if you throw away this old rule and go with pieces you love in the finishes you love.
Heck no. The gray trend started about eight-ten years ago, and while it's had a GREAT run, its time is up. These days, instead of gray-wash floors, my clients are leaning into more natural woods in light to medium depths.
Here, designers, decorators, and color experts reveal why beige is replacing gray for 2023, and how to decorate with beige for a beautiful scheme every time.
However, those dated, honey oak cabinets you have from the 1980's and 90's are not coming back into fashion… sorry. Today's wood cabinets have clean, modern lines and more muted tones. They are also used in combination with other cabinet colors, like creamy whites, off-blacks, sage greens, and smoky blues.
Curves Everywhere. While it's been on the rise for a few years now, designer Grey Joyner tells us that curves will be ever-present in 2023. “Curved upholstery, such as curved back sofas and barrel chairs, as well as round pillows and accessories, seem to be making a comeback for 2023,” Joyner says.
Marvelous Magenta
Though it's derived from the red family, magenta brings forward a vibrant spirit all of its own that people will be craving in the upcoming year. The Pantone Color Institute named Viva Magenta as its official color of the year for 2023 for its joyous yet powerful nature.

60-30-10 Rule
