Fungus grows in soil because it thrives in environments with excess moisture, high humidity, and stagnant air. If the top layer of dirt stays consistently wet, these naturally occurring fungal spores multiply and feed on decaying organic matter in the soil, like dead leaves or bark.
To kill fungus in soil, first remove visible mold by scraping away the top inch of dirt. Then, apply natural treatments like a hydrogen peroxide spray (1 part 3% peroxide to 9 parts water) or a cinnamon/baking soda dusting. Finally, let the soil dry completely and increase airflow to prevent it from returning.

Infections are caused by breathing in fungal spores from soil or dust. Many people breathe in the spores without ever getting sick but some people develop severe illness.
Soil fungus can look vastly different depending on the species and its growth stage. It often appears as white, fuzzy mold on the soil surface, as a cobweb-like network beneath the soil, or as visible mushrooms and puffballs.

Life history and habits. During their seven-to-ten-day lifespan, a single female can lay up to 200 eggs in soil media. Fungus gnat larvae usually reside in the top 5-8 cm of the growing medium, depending on moisture level, where they primarily feed on fungi, algae, and decaying plant matter.
While some gardeners use coffee grounds to deter insects, they are not recommended for killing fungus gnats. In fact, moist or damp coffee grounds can attract fungus gnats and provide an ideal breeding ground for their larvae.
Fungal diseases

After growth in culture, fungi are identified based on visual characteristics such as colony morphology and color. Light microscopy is useful to evaluate the microscopic morphology of yeasts and to determine the presence of septate or nonseptate hyphae and fruiting structures for molds (Table 4-3).
