(Aero) Double Roller Blinds: Double Roller blinds make a fantastic addition to bedrooms that are frequently exposed to sunlight. They feature two layers of fabric in the one roller system, meaning you get twice the UV protection. For best results, pair a blockout fabric layer with a sunscreen fabric layer.
Dimout Blinds
Dimout roller blinds are a thinner type of material that will help to filter out the sunlight, whilst still allowing enough in that you can see what you're doing. These blinds are great for living rooms, kitchens, bathrooms etc. Places that you don't need to fully blackout the sunlight.
Roller blinds are effective for keeping heat out as they act as a barrier between the sunlight and the room. With roller blinds you can open your door/window whilst your blind is lowered.
The most effective material to block out the sun is a blackout fabric, such as woven polyester. This type of material blocks out 100% of sunlight and can be used in both roller shades and pleated shades.
Aerogel is more expensive, but definitely the best type of insulation. Fiberglass is cheap, but requires careful handling. Mineral wool is effective, but not fire resistant. Cellulose is fire resistant, eco-friendly, and effective, but hard to apply.
Sun Protection Paints and Coatings
We also advise using special paints and lacquers that resist UV rays. You can add them to your wooden furniture to prevent them from fading and damaging under the daily sun exposure.
Furniture Cover
It is crucial to invest in good furniture covers for your wood furniture if you have a naturally lit home. When you're not using your natural wood tables, cover the wood to avoid further damage from the sunlight. For outdoor furniture, make sure to find a cover that is wind, rain and heat resistant.
It is a common misconception to think that more sunlight can help 'dry' out the wood and prevent mold and mildew growth. However, the summer sun can be harsh and prolonged exposure to UV rays can cause significant damage to your patio furniture.
By contrast, blackout shades block out all sunlight, making them the perfect choice for bedrooms, nurseries, media rooms, or any rooms that need to be kept dark.
So, the 50mm slat on a faux wood blind will provide better light blocking than the 25mm slat on aluminium venetian blinds. While this window treatment won't block 100% of the light, it does offer better light control than any other blind. You can raise, angle or lower the slats to direct the light however you want it.
Blinds in this position offer some amount of privacy but not complete privacy like that offered by blinds in the up position. During the day, to protect yourself, your furnishings, and flooring from harmful UV rays, it's best to turn up your blind slats.
Use placemats and coasters to act as a barrier between hot plates, liquids, and the table's surface, preventing heat marks and water rings. Cover your dining table with a tablecloth or table runner to add an extra layer of protection against scratches and spills.
Seal wooden outdoor furniture with polyurethane
It's important to seal wooden outdoor furniture with a coat of polyurethane. “Polyurethane will help protect your wood from the sun, and it will also bring out the wood's natural beauty,” Knapp says.
If your furniture is metal or plastic, apply an even coat of outdoor furniture protector (a paint brush can make this job easier). If your furniture is wood, regular ol' paint is the best way to protect it from the sun. The pigments in paint work like sunscreen and protect the wood from harm.
Varnish protects wood furniture from sun damage by absorbing UV rays. This will keep the wood from discolouring and extend its life. We advise using marine varnish for outdoor furniture because it is more water-resistant than other types of varnish. For example, spar varnish is the best choice for indoor furniture.
Minwax Helmsman Urethane (water-based solution) is definitely one of the most effective clear coat finishes available for outdoor wood materials. This product does not only include UV blockers to protect against any damage caused by the sun's radiation, including severe cracking or fade in time.
Cotton. Cotton is a natural fibre that is breathable and comfortable. It's a great choice for homes in hot climates as your sofas won't leave you feeling clammy. Furthermore, this fabric resists fading, which is key when your furniture receives direct sunlight.
Aluminum has an emissivity of around 0.04. That means it radiates very little heat away from its surface, which is one reason why radiators aren't made from aluminum! Aluminum foil can be an effective insulating material because it doesn't radiate heat out into the environment.
Exterior shutters and shades are usually made of a variety of materials, including fabric, wood, steel, aluminum, or vinyl. They are most effective at reducing solar heat gain. Shades are typically fabric or vinyl and the material may have openings that allow some visibility through the window.
An insulator is a material that does not allow a transfer of electricity or heat energy. Materials that are poor thermal conductors can also be described as being good thermal insulators. Feather, fur, and natural fibers are all examples of natural insulators.
Spreading tin foil on any windows that receive direct sunlight can redirect the sun and heat away from your home. While it may introduce a somewhat space-age aesthetic to your household, it's a cheap and temporary fix to the problem of extreme heat.
For solar applications that use mirrors, thin coatings of silver, aluminum and other metals serve as good reflectors of light.
