Should You Wet Your Brush Before Applying Polyurethane? Wetting your brush before applying polyurethane is not necessary and can actually hinder the application process. Instead, ensure your brush is clean and dry before dipping it into the polyurethane.
Soak your brush in mineral spirits for about 10 minutes prior to beginning your application, pressing the brush into the mineral spirits to get rid of any air in the bristles of the brush.
Another way to get it nice an smooth is to do a rubbed finish. Instead of applying with a brush, use a rag or wool applicator. This will allow you to do multiple things coats and get a nice smooth finish. You can also use the silicone oil with this with the same caveat.
Use a clean microfiber towel to apply polyurethane. Coat every layer against the grain. For difficult-to-reach places or surfaces with elaborate designs, like chair rails, an aerosol spray works well. Apply in a well-ventilated area while holding the can 8 to 12 inches above the surface.
When applying polyurethane use a soft foam brush not a bristle brush which should eliminate bubbles. It is highly recommended to use very fine steel wool to smooth the surface between coats and that will also remove any small air bubbles providing a glass like finish.
Pop and Smooth: If you see bubbles forming, gently pop them with a pin or sharp blade while the finish is still wet. Then, smooth the area with your brush or applicator. Let It Settle: Give the polyurethane a few minutes to settle after stirring but before applying it.
Two coats of finish are suggested for most interior projects. When sealing floors, you should apply three coats. However, do not apply more than two coats in one day. 220 grit sandpaper should be used between coats to remove any air bubbles, but avoid using steel wool.
Lambswool applicators
A lambswool applicator on a wood block is the recommended method for applying oil-based polyurethane to a hardwood floor. But if you've recently bought a lambswool applicator, be careful. The fibers tend to get stuck in wet finish.
Too thick of a coat: Applying too thick of a coat can extend drying times, leading to issues with subsequent layers.
Use a Roller on Large, Flat Surfaces
rollers lets you apply the poly fast and evenly. No brushstrokes, puddles or thin spots.
Make sure to sand the polyurethane between coats. Sanding removes drips, bubbles and other uneven spots in each coat. Dry the first coat for a full 24 hours. If the coat feels tacky or sticky after that, let dry until it feels completely dry.
Satin Polyurethane– A medium to low sheen finish, currently ranking as the most popular finishing choice among consumers because of its versatility and ease of maintenance. If you have recently been inside of a home with polyurethane flooring, there is a good chance it had a satin finish.

The final coat gives your workpiece its smooth feel and flawless appearance, so give it extra attention. Spray on this coat using an aerosol polyurethane and let it cure overnight, photo below. Hold the spray nozzle 12–16" from the workpiece and sweep the can across the surface without stopping.
Streaks and brush marks can be fixed by sanding and reapplying. Let the coat with streaks or brush strokes dry completely. Next, lightly sand with 220 grit sandpaper to remove the streaks or brush strokes. Then, remove the sanding dust.
Thin coat, let dry per the instructions on the can. Then sand lightly with either 320 or 400 grit sandpaper. You want a fine dust. Wipe clean with a tack cloth then apply your next coat.
Bubbles and streaks can ruin the smooth finish of your polyurethane floor. To avoid bubbles, make sure to stir the polyurethane gently and avoid shaking the can. When applying, use a high-quality brush or roller and apply thin, even coats.
Polyurethane will dry to touch in 3 hours. Under ideal drying conditions, allow 6 hours before recoating. Overnight drying is recommended.
There is no difference between the terms urethane and polyurethane. That might seem confusing, so here's a quick explanation. Polyurethane is a polymer. A polymer consists of repeating units that are chemically linked in a particular pattern.
Epoxy offers higher levels of rigidity and adhesion than polyurethane, making it better suited for harder surfaces.
Poly gets applied directly over the stain once it's dry. Read the stain can to see how long you should wait for the stain you are using. Do not sand, never sand stain.
While the polyurethane molding is much more durable than wood– it does exhibit the qualities of wood, and one of them is possibly getting dented on impact (i.e., the impact of a vacuum cleaner on a baseboard). The polymer baseboards can withstand those blows.
