House Digest interviewed Frontdoor virtual appliance expert Garret Bergstrom about it, and he gave us his exclusive take: modern dryers are built for steady use, but operating them uninterrupted can worsen existing problems under the right circumstances.
The cool down is a normal process of all dryers if set on automatic. All dryers run the dry cycle and then fluff cool to remove wrinkles and allow the cooling so you don't burn yourself with the hot clothes. If you don't want a cool down period then set the mode for ``more dry'' and not on auto or simple timed dry.
Some folks like to wait an hour after one cycle concludes before putting in a new load. But in fact, running back-to-back dryer loads is smart and efficient. It lets you take advantage of retained heat from the previous cycle, cutting down on energy usage.
Understanding how washers and dryers work can help you see why overloading them is a bad idea. These machines are designed with specific mechanisms to efficiently clean and dry your clothes. When overloaded, these mechanisms can't function properly, leading to subpar performance and potential damage.
For a start, overloading your appliance could damage your machine's drum and decrease your washer's efficiency. In the end, clothes won't come out as clean, either, so a second wash may be necessary. This all adds up to increased electrical consumption and higher energy bills.
Just as with washing clothes, drying a full load of clothes is much more energy efficient than only drying half a load or less. 16. Dry towels and heavy cottons separately. When mixed with fast-drying lighter-weight items, these slow-drying items cause the whole load to take longer and use more energy.
Anything more than three-quarters full constitutes an extra-large load. Care will need to be taken here not to overfill or over-dose on the detergent in these cases. When you have to make two trips to the washer because two arms aren't enough to carry it all, then you're dealing with an extra-large load of laundry.
Firstly, when a washer or dryer is overloaded, it has to work much harder than it's designed to. This can cause the machine to overheat, leading to potential fire hazards. Overloading can also cause electrical components to short-circuit, again increasing the risk of fire.
To prevent overloading, the dryer should never be more than 3/4 full. Additionally, clothes may not dry properly if the dryer contains too few items. It's recommended to dry at least 3 to 5 items, ensuring the sensors in your dryer can accurately detect the laundry's dryness level during a Sensor Dry cycle.
If you use your dryer for too long, or if you leave the door open while drying clothes, then you could end up with a fire. Electric dryers catch fire often because they are designed to heat up quickly, so they overheat easily. They also have a fan that sometimes can blow hot air into the room.
Overusing a dryer might not doom it to an imminent demise, but it can increase the odds that moving parts and other components that are sensitive to length of use will have problems.
Your dryer shouldn't need more than one cycle. If it is taking two or more loads to dry your clothes, it might be time to schedule your professional dryer vent cleaning.
Don't stop the dryer mid cycle. It is possible that heat can continue to build in the drum and lead the clothes to ignite. This can occur several hours after the dryer has been stopped.
If the safety thermostat is not working, it may be possible for your dryer to overheat. It's also important to remember that if the safety thermostat trips, there is likely something wrong with the dryer that causes it to overheat.
When a new dryer starts up for the first time, it may smell like something is burning, as any oil residue from the packing material heats up. In this case, run the dryer empty for approximately 15 minutes until the odor has dissipated. For other types of odors, this guide will help you identify and fix them.
Your tumble dryer will have a warning light to tell you when the tank is getting full, but it's best to get into the habit of emptying it after each use to avoid a full tank interrupting the cycle and increasing the drying time and energy usage.

Running the machine consecutively for more than one load can overheat the mechanism and damage the machine. The dryer needs time to cool down. You should ideally keep a minimum duration of at least 30 minutes between cycles.
The average life expectancy of a dryer is around 10-13 years. And no matter how great your clothes dryer is, all appliances will wear down eventually.
Too many clothes in the dryer can cause it to shake, vibrate, and rattle. Adding a load more than it was built to handle will lead to poor performance, and the clothes will not dry fully. The dryer might get damaged if the additional load causes it to scrape against the door, walls, or floor.
