The normal plan is to aim for a 1/8" gap between pairs of doors that cover one opening.
There needs to be a 'Gap' or space, so that when your cabinets are connected together, they do not rub with the door/drawers on the cabinet beside it. If set to "1.7" for example, it will provide a 1.7mm gap on both the left and right side of your door/drawer on each cabinet.
Open the door, and look at the hinge assembly inside the cabinet wall. Focus on the screw in the bottom hinge that is nearest to the door bracket. Use your screwdriver to adjust the hinge so it moves toward the gap to even up the space. “You move it out just a touch,” says Cornwell.
When you have a pair of doors covering one opening, you are going to plan for a 1/8" gap between them. So on our 1/2" overlay plan, the top and bottom of each doors will still have a 1/2" overlay, and the hinge side of each door will have a 1/2" overlay.
Overlay Double Cabinet Doors
Then you need to determine what you center reveal will be. A center reveal for cabinets should be no smaller than 3/32″ to allow room to open and close the doors without bumping each other and no larger than 1/8″ or it can look sloppy.
Most door installers look for a gap in the middle of double doors between 3mm and 5mm – that's less than ¼ inch. This means the doors will swing correctly and there's no risk of them hitting one another. Any gap between doors bigger than 5mm is too much and will look out of place.
A gap of around 1/8th of an inch is recommended for standard doors to keep the elements out, protect the paint on the trim, and ensure that the door closes and opens smoothly. The right amount of space is equal to the thickness of your door with a little extra room for clearance while opening or closing.
Two doors are fitted side by side, with their vertical edges – or stiles – coming together in the centre. For the pair to open correctly, a gap of 2-3mm will need to be left between the doors in the centre of the doorway. This ensures that they open and close without catching on each other, or 'binding'.
The gap sizes around swinging doors can influence the fire and smoke spread through fire rated construction. The current standard (i.e. NFPA 80) prescribes that the bottom gap be no larger than 3/4 in. (19.05 mm), and the side and top gaps be no larger than 1/8 in.
But, in most cases, these are the causes: Door Frame Damage. Broken Weather Stripping. House Settling.
A thin bead of caulk can seal or fill that small gap between cabinets and floors in less than 30 minutes. I love a quick win, guys! This DIY works on gaps 1/4″ and smaller. If your gap is larger than a 1/4″, you should use trim first, like quarter round.
Often times, when a cabinet door won't close, and there is no damage to the door itself, the culprit is a worn-out or damaged hinge. Hinge adjustments on cabinets are not difficult with some patience.
Door sweeps are installed on the outside face of the door, preventing dust, water, and other elements from building up beneath the door and entering the home. Exterior door sweeps are typically made of vinyl, but they can also be made of brush material. They come in a variety of widths to fit standard door sizes.
For cabinets with solid-wood door frames and traditional butt hinges, aim for a 1⁄8-in. reveal on all sides of the door. This size gap accommodates seasonal wood movement and potential binding, and it suits most drawer slides, which have a bit of play in them.
Add space for door overlay: Cabinet doors for framed cabinets must be larger than the cabinet opening to look right and close properly. We refer to this as an "overlay". The industry standard for most cabinet doors is a 1/2 inch overlay around the cabinet door.
The space between kitchen cabinets and the ceiling is called “Soffit”. A kitchen soffit is specifically a boxy shape designed to cover up pipes, wiring, and other mechanical or to fill the gap between the top cabinets and the ceiling.
There should be a 2mm or 3mm gap between the door and the frame on both sides and the top. If you do need to cut the door down to size, keep in mind that you need to cut all four sides of the door equally whenever possible to retain an accurate shape or pattern if the door is panelled.
A well fitted door should have a 2mm gap on either side and at the top. The gap at the bottom will depend on the thickness of your flooring/carpet. Plane the door as required, using an electric plane will help you get an even finish, and sand for a smooth finish.
