USING YOUR FILTER
When you use your filter for the first time ONLY, run cold water for five minutes.
If you have a PUR Plus filter, soak the filter in cold water for 15 minutes. Then hold the filter under cold running tap water for 10 seconds. Allow excess to drain.
As long as you have followed the proper instructions to flush your new water filter with three gallons of water, you can usually drink the water right after you've finished the replacement. Check the instructions for your filter to make sure.
If you just replaced the water filter and don't have water from the dispenser, the reservoir tank or tubing has not filled yet. Press the dispenser for several minutes to purge air from the line and make sure all the tubing is filled with water.
If you don't soak your new RO membrane, cleaning the water might not work as well. Not soaking it can slow the water filtering, so you get less clean water. Also, the membrane might get dirty faster without soaking, meaning you'll have to clean or replace it more often.
By the end of the fourth week or into the fifth week, ammonia and nitrite levels should reach zero, indicating that your tank is fully cycled.
With clean hands, hold filter under cold, running tap water for 15 seconds. Insert filter into reservoir by lining up groove in filter with ridge in reservoir. Press firmly for a tight seal. *Do not wash in dishwasher.

Carefully remove the impeller, clean it thoroughly, and ensure all obstructions are removed before reassembling the impeller.
You always should run some water through a new filter before drinking from it. A new filter will sometimes have loose filtering material rattling around, and you don't want it to end up in your water glass. Running some water through should easily get all of the loose particles out.
If your water source is particularly poor, one round of filtration may not be enough to remove residual odors and flavors that contribute to a funky taste.
