40 volume developer is the strongest level of developer, and we do not recommend it for at home use. Even with dark hair, it is easier and safer to do several rounds of lightning with a lower volume developer rather than try to lift your hair an extreme amount in one go with a higher volume developer.
Bleach/thickened bleach must only be used on white clothes. It will change the color of colored clothes. You should not pour bleach directly on laundry. Wash them with bleach after diluting in water.

If the bleach is too thick it will bleach unevenly. If it's too watery it won't work as well. Make sure you saturate the hair fully. Look at the bottom of the section of hair and open it up to make sure that it's fully saturated with bleach.
Procedures for preparing and using diluted bleach
mix bleach with cold water (hot water decomposes the sodium hypochlorite and renders it ineffective); if using bleach containing 5% sodium hypochlorite, dilute it to 0.05%, as shown in Table G. 1 below.
How long you can leave the bleach on for depends on your hair shape and the thickness of individual hair strands. If you have coily hair, or fine hair that's straight, wavy or curly, it will likely process more quickly, so don't leave the bleach on your roots for longer than 20-30 mins per quarter.
Additionally, there are different strengths of bleach. The percent of Sodium Hypochlorite in the product you are using has a huge effect on the overall performance of the product.
