Safety Recall
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Vornado is voluntarily recalling certain VH2 Whole Room Heater units because the power cord can partially detach from the enclosure, which can lead to cord damage over time, posing electric shock and fire hazards.
Sealed combustion heaters are much safer to operate than other types of space heaters, and operate more efficiently because they do not draw in the heated air from the room and exhaust it to the outdoors.
Dust Accumulation: If the heater has been unused for a while, dust may have accumulated on the heating elements. When you turn it on, the dust can burn off, creating a temporary burnt smell.
For instance, if you turn on your heater for the first time of the season and smell burning dust, this is completely normal. It just means there's dust in your heating unit, which is harmless and should burn off quickly. If you smell an electrical burning smell, on the other hand, this is not normal at all.
Vornado Heaters should be cleaned using the brush attachment on a vacuum cleaner and compressed air such as the small cans sold for use with computer equipment. You can also use Q-tips to reach inside the grill to clean dirty fan blades.
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, space heaters are involved in more than a thousand home fires every year.

Space Heater Safety Tips
Make sure to keep flammable materials at least 3 feet away. Always plug space heaters directly into a wall outlet and never into a power strip, to prevent overloading and causing a fire. Do not leave space heaters running unattended, including at night when you are sleeping.
The most common cause of a burning smell in a heater is dust. If you turn off your furnace or heating unit during the warmer months, it will collect dust. When this dust builds up on components like the heat exchanger or burners, your heater will emit a burning smell when you turn it on again.
- Do not use this heater in an RV, boat or during any application where battery power is converted to AC power. - Place this product at least 3 feet away on all sides from electrical outlets, furniture, pillows, bedding, papers, clothes, curtains and other objects that may cause or catch on fire.
Dust particles are always floating in the air and eventually, they rest on the surfaces of your house, including your heaters. A day's worth of dust on your heater will burn off quite quickly and inconspicuously, however, months of dust will add layer upon layer.
The smell of burning plastic or rubber is more serious than a misplaced object. It can mean electrical failure, so don't run your heater if you can't find what's causing it to smell. A musty odor is a sign of mold and mildew in your heating system or ductwork.
Test Safety Monitors. You should have smoke, radon, and carbon monoxide detectors installed in your home. If you don't already, purchase some. Check the batteries in all of them and then test the detectors to make sure they function properly before you turn on your heater.
