When planting tomatoes in a raised bed, use a 50-50 blend of garden soil and potting mix, or 100 percent organic Miracle-Gro® Performance Organics® Raised Bed Mix. When growing tomatoes in pots, choose a container that is at least 18 to 24 inches wide.
Choosing the best soil
Tomatoes like well-draining, nitrogen-rich soil. This means extra compost, blood-meal or crushed eggshells will make them happy. You want to make sure they have a steady source of calcium carbonate throughout the growing season, which is exactly what eggshells are made up of!
This fertilizer mix is Pepper Joe's favored method for growing strong, healthy plants. You can typically find Miracle-Gro at a store near you like Walmart, or you can purchase the size you want online. You can use any of Miracle-Grow's Plant Food products or Tomato Plant Food.
The problem with MG is that the nitrogen is derived from synthetic ammonium and water soluble nitrates, producing off-chemicals that are harmful to soil microbes, worms, and all other forms of life in the soil.
While many high quality bagged soils, such as Miracle-Gro® All Purpose Garden Soil and Miracle-Gro® Potting Mix, contain plenty of food to give plants a good start, many plants (especially heavy-feeding plants like tomatoes and dahlias) need more as the season wears on.
Potting mix is meant to stand alone, as opposed to being mixed in with existing soils. It is a self-contained product designed to provide potted plants with everything they need to grow and thrive. Garden soil is meant to be spread around. Mix garden soil in with your native dirt to improve it.

Tomatoes are prone to magnesium deficiency later in the growing season, which can show with yellowing leaves and diminished production. Ultra Epsom Salt treatments at the beginning of their planting and throughout their seasonal life can help to prevent and remedy magnesium deficiency in your tomato plants.
Some growers prefer to use a high-phosphorus fertilizer, indicated by a larger middle number. You can also keep things simple with a fertilizer especially formulated for tomatoes – usually with a ratio like 3-4-6 or 4-7-10. Most importantly, don't over-fertilize. Too little fertilizer is always better than too much.
Use a Sea Salt Fertilizer
It's true that a lot of salt can be bad for plants, but several studies and taste tests have shown that tomatoes grown with salty, brackish water end up tasting better.
In general, determinate tomatoes tend to do better in pots, so look for those. It's also possible to grow indeterminate tomatoes in containers, of course, as long as you provide enough support and soil volume.
Soil. Use a high-quality soilless potting mix, which can contain perlite, vermiculite, peat moss, bark or coco coir, all of which help to lighten the soil. Garden soil is too heavy and compacted for container use, preventing air, water and nutrients from reaching the root zone.
Miracle-Gro Potting Mix (*Best Overall Potting Soil )
This potting mix was notable in that it was so average—and in potting mixes, that's a good thing! It had good drainage and grew the tomatoes well.
Green Space: Too rich of soil can mean a poor crop of tomatoes.
There's one situation gardening experts agree can call for supplementing with Epsom salt—that's when your tomato plants have a magnesium deficiency. "Magnesium deficiency usually appears as leaves with bright green ribs and veins and otherwise discolored areas of yellow, red, or brown," Koehn says.
A great option for a fertilizer that can be used at the planting stage is the Expert Gardener All Purpose Plant Fertilizer 10-10-10 available at Walmart. Once the cucumber plants are flowering, then a fertilizer designed for growing tomatoes is the best option for a feed that is high in potassium.

An all purpose greenhouse fertilizer, i.e. 20-20-20, is a poor choice for tomatoes. Tomatoes need a grade with much lower nitrogen and much higher potassium, as well as several other essential elements.
Per the manufacturer, Miracle-Gro Water Soluble All Purpose Plant Food can be applied at anytime. If plants are experiencing drought or really dry soil, then it is suggested to water the plant before applying the product. Light to moderate rain is perfectly fine before or after an application.
Gardening magazine's trial of the best soil mixture for raised beds found that a blend of 50% topsoil, 25% coarse sand and 25% compost was best. It determined that although the mix was quite heavy to put in the bed, it didn't settle much and was simple to dig.
Use Premium Potting Soil
To grow a successful container vegetable garden, start with great soil - not soil from your yard, but what's known as a potting mix. These mixes, like Miracle-Gro® Potting Mix, contain the right blend of materials to create an ideal growing environment for roots inside a pot.
