For balancing aesthetics and upkeep, you can't go wrong with a neutral grey or beige grout. These lightly pigmented grouts will enhance the pattern of both light and dark colored tiles, have less risk of staining your tile compared to a dark grout and will conceal dirt and stains better than a white grout.
Grey grout is much better and used more frequently. Over time white grout looks a little yellow and not a pretty sight against white tiles.
Grout in simple, neutral shades works with most tile colors. Black, gray, and white are classic options, but other colors like beige, brown, tan, blue, and mossy green are frequently used.
What is important to know is that white grout will show dirt more, therefore you'll have to spend more time cleaning it. If you're set on white grout, you might consider using Epoxy Grout, which is stain-resistant.
White grout is the easiest grout color to maintain. Plus it is the same color as your hard water deposits. In a shower grout turns white from hard water, pink from soap scum reacting with calcium in the water or black from mold. Bleach is your only and best defense against mold and it will turn any grout white.
Neutral grout colours are lower maintenance
Dark and light grout tend to show more dirt and stains over time, while a neutral grout such as beige or grey won't show dirt as readily.
Simply add one part water to two parts baking soda and mix into a paste, rub it on the stained grout, let it sit overnight, then scrub off the following day with a stiff nylon brush.
If you're trying to unify your tile, such as with a wood look tile floor, go for a close match that's a little bit lighter than your tile. If you want to highlight a color or accent in your tile, like the gray veins in a marble tile, go for a close match, or a bit darker than that shade in your tile.
If you don't want to go through all this to keep your grout clean, you can install epoxy grout. Unlike sand grout, epoxy grout is not porous, and dirt cannot be ground into it.
Grout Sealing: Apply a grout sealer annually to protect white grout from stains and discoloration. Ensure the grout lines are clean and dry before applying the sealer. Avoid harsh cleaners: Steer clear of abrasive cleaners and bleach-based products, as they can damage grout over time and cause discoloration.
Jim Whitfield, manager of Technical Services at Mapei told industry professionals, “Because epoxy grout is so tough, it wears extremely well. It doesn't wear down over time and become a tile gutter—like cement grout can—where all the dirt and liquid and junk collects.”
Your tiles will be coated in a thin layer of grout, commonly called grout haze. Sometimes this is hard to see but usually it shows as a greyish haze. What causes the problem? When the tiler is grouting your tiles, the grout gets spread across the tile surface as he works it firmly into the joints.
Pure white grout with any gray makes a splash. If you want to create a unique design on your fireplace, interior wall, or even your shower walls, take a look at our Paloma Denim. Floor tile also needs forethought.
Using grey grout is a simple and affordable way to quickly add some wow-factor to a room. Another benefit to grey grout is that it can be a saviour for tiles in high traffic areas that are prone to dirt and debris, grey grout will mask this so you don't feel the need to clean the tiled area every day.
How To Change Grout Color: Re-Paint Existing Grout. Painting your existing grout with a special colorant is the least labor-intensive method. You'll need a bottle of grout colorant of your preferred color; Upton recommends Mapei. You'll also need a small brush and a microfiber cloth.
White grout is always a popular choice and creates a fresh look when used with any tile colour. As you can see below on the left, used alongside darker tiles such as Manton Hollow from our Savernake collection, white grout accentuates the grid pattern of the tiles.
Epoxy grouts are the most durable of all grout choices because they are resistant to stains and water damage, and will hold up against harsh cleaners (please don't use harsh acidic cleaners on our tile!).
Factor in Tile Color and Pattern
For example, an intricate mosaic tile with multiple colours and shapes will look cluttered with high-contrast grout. A contrasting grout highlights and accentuates a tile design, so make sure your chosen tile can stand up to that attention.
Professionals often use steam to loosen the dirt and other particles trapped in the grout without needing to scrub manually. While every steam cleaning machine is different, you'll follow this basic process to clean grout lines: Use a steam cleaner with a small nylon brush attachment.
It's important to remember that black grout can be very messy and difficult to clean up. Grout is similar to kinetic sand in texture—it's gritty, and it can go everywhere, even with the most experienced professional. And because there's such a contrast between the tile and grout color-wise, any mistake will stand out.
Neutral grouts are a great happy medium and safe bet for a bathroom grout color.
Light grey has a similar effect to softer whites—it defines the tile and gives subtle contrast. It is also a favorite because it is easier to keep looking clean. The darker the grey you select, the more contrast you will get and the more the subway grout line will become the attention grabber rather than the tile.
The most common reason is moisture from the ground below the slab, but grout may also turn white from the rain in outdoor installations, or in rare cases from water used to clean the floor.
First of all you don't really need to seal your grout. I assume it is a cementitious grout, which is porous. Put generally speaking you don't have to seal it. It will get darker over time whether you seal it or not, but it will be easier to clean and will less likely stain if you do seal it.
It works on the tile and the grout, effectively cleaning everything from hard water stains to mold and mildew stains to soap scum.
