It's official – Dewalt announced today that their 18V NiCad cordless power tool system will be discontinued, and they expect for remaining NiCad batteries to be phased out by March 2022. Dewalt also notes that their 18V XRP Li-ion battery (DC9180) has already been discontinued.
Supply of Dewalt 18V NiCad batteries (DC9096 and DC9096S) are expected to run through March 2022. Additionally, the 18V XR Lithium Ion Battery (DC9180) and all other compatible battery models for 18V XRP have been discontinued.
The supply of DeWalt 18V NiCad batteries is estimated to run through March 2022, and the 18V XRP Lithium-Ion Battery and all other compatible battery models for 18V XRP have been discontinued. Users may implement the DeWalt 18V To 20V adapter allowing the use of 20V Max Lithium-Ion batteries in most 18V DeWalt tools.
20V Versus 18V is Really About Marketing
That means 18V high-power tools and 10.8-volt tools. From a marketing standpoint, being able to put a higher number on the tool makes it seem more powerful. Putting a nominal voltage on it is a representation of where the battery operates most of the time.

Add versatility to your tool box with the 20V MAX* to 18V Battery Adapter Kit. This adapter allows you to use select DEWALT® 20V MAX* Lithium Ion slide pack batteries with DEWALT 18V power tools.
As you might know, the difference between Dewalt 20V Max and 18V is essentially marketing in nature, rather than relating to electrical power. There is no functional difference between 20V Max and 18V! 18V is the nominal voltage for 5x 3.6V Li-ion batteries connected in series.
Keep your DEWALT 20-Volt MAX Tools running longer with a premium 5.0 Amp hour Lithium-Ion battery packs. These Premium XR battery packs are compatible with the entire line of 20-Volt Max tools.
XR Stands for eXtreme Runtime. ( may also be called extended runtime) If it's stamped on the batteries: this is our claim that these batteries last longer than our non-XR versions. They are the higher amp hour batteries and have a larger fuel tank. If it is stamped on the tool: this means that the tool is brushless.
See our ethics statement. Here are two things you probably don't know: One, a whole bunch of the top power tool brands — including DeWalt, Black & Decker, Craftsman, Porter-Cable and more — are all owned by the same company, Stanley Black & Decker.
XRP is a cryptocurrency that runs on the Ripple network. The main reason behind its low price is that the US security and Exchange Commission (SEC) is suing Ripple for $1.3 billion.
The Bottom Line
To put it simply, DeWalt Atomic tools are compact 20V Max solutions that include brushless models. DeWalt 20V Max XR tools are high-performance brushless models. Both use the same battery, but Atomic focuses on smaller sizing and XR targets higher performance.
Dewalt has designed their XR Li-Ion battery platform to be compatible with both their current and older 18V tools. This ensures that you can upgrade your battery pack to the DCB184 while still being able to use it with your existing 18V tools.
DEWALT 20V MAX is the next line after 18V, introducing lithium-ion batteries. DEWALT 20V XR improved on the 20V MAX line by introducing brushless motors and high-capacity lithium-ion batteries. DEWALT 20V ATOMIC are designed to be compact and powerful for a wide range of applications.
No. The various drill and battery versions are (deliberately) re-designed so it is impossible to insert the wrong voltage battery into the wrong tool.
Battery Voltage
The higher the voltage, typically, the more cells that are in the battery pack. So when comparing a 40V pack to a 20V pack, in most cases the 40V pack will have more cells which means more power capacity available.
24V charger to 20V battery will work in a so-so way. As long as the charger can deliver a higher voltage than the battery(and sufficient amps to be useful) it'll push energy into the battery. But if the voltage or battery chemistry isn't a match between battery and charger, the charger won't know when to quit charging.
Different Battery Systems
DeWalt 20V MAX and DeWalt 20V/60V MAX FLEXVOLT batteries are used to power DeWalt 20V MAX tools and are not compatible with the Milwaukee M18 battery system - nor are their battery chargers compatible.
The DeWalt to Ryobi Badaptor allows you to convert your existing 18-20V DeWalt batteries for use with Ryobi 18V power tools, allowing you to use the Ryobi power tool range without having to buy a whole new battery system.
Are DeWalt and Craftsman batteries interchangeable? No, the voltage might be the same but the connection are all different. There are adapters available but they are a little pricey, about 25 dollars.
DeWalt Company History
DeWalt is an American company that represents a worldwide brand of power tools for the construction, manufacturing, and woodworking industries. The DeWalt brand actually falls under the umbrella of Stanley Black & Decker.
Black & Decker and DeWalt are two of the most widely recognized names in power tools. And interestingly enough, they're both owned by the same company, as Black & Decker bought DeWalt back in 1960. But when it comes to cost, quality, product selection, and warranty, there are some major differences.
No, Dewalt does not own Milwaukee. In fact, both companies are owned by separate parent companies. Dewalt is under the Stanley Black & Decker umbrella, which also owns Irwin tools. Milwaukee was acquired by a Hong Kong technology company by the name of TechTronic in 2005.
