A reverse osmosis (RO) system employs a number of processes to produce great-tasting, low-sodium drinking water. An RO system eliminates around 97% of total dissolved solids (TDS) like salt and sodium from your water. Most bottled water companies, including Culligan, use reverse osmosis in their bottling process.
Culligan drinking water systems use reverse osmosis, a process that pushes water through a specialized membrane, filtering out harmful contaminants like lead, chlorine, and other impurities that affect taste and quality.
Reverse Osmosis is a water treatment technology most commonly known for its use in the purification of drinking water. It is likely you have consumed reverse osmosis water under the recognized brands Aquafina®, Dasani®, Nestle Pure Life® and Smart Water®.
Culligan water uses a reverse osmosis purification process that reduces microscopic impurities and contaminants far more effectively than carbon filter pitchers and faucet filter attachments.
Our water is rigorously tested to ensure it meets or exceeds all state and federal safety standards.
We work with third-party organizations to certify our filtration products meet industry requirements (NSF/ASNI standard 53 for Total PFAS) set by the WQA. Culligan's Bottled Water delivery also ensures safe drinking water for you and your family.
Bottled Water Quality
Culligan Bottled Water exceeds or meets every U.S. and all state health requirements. The U.S. FDA (Food and Drug Administration) provides regulations for bottled water as a food product, compared to the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) which sets regulations for municipal water.
Reverse osmosis performs water filtration by passing it through multiple stages of filtration stripping off all the minerals. In the final filtration stage, it adds healthy minerals back into the water. Distillation, on the other hand, also purifies water but doesn't add healthy minerals to the water.
We sanitize and reuse PET – BPA free bottles in accordance with FDA regulations, unlike the unsanitary fill it yourself machines at the big box stores. After the bottles useful life we recycle them – eliminating countless plastic bottles from the waste stream every year.
The water for Dasani is disinfected and treated with reverse osmosis and nanofiltration to remove impurities and has a small amount of mineral salts added to enhance taste.
The reverse osmosis membrane has extremely high filtration precision, with pores as small as 0.0001 micrometers. The water treated through RO is healthy, safe, and pure, and stored in a water tank for convenient access and direct consumption.
Water contains an ideal balance of naturally occurring minerals, which provide excellent quality water with an outstanding taste. While we filter our water prior to bottling, distillation and reverse osmosis are two very distinct and very different processes used to treat water.
As you're researching water filtration options, you might notice that RO systems are more expensive than pitcher, countertop and other basic filter configurations. Why is this? The simple answer is that reverse osmosis is a unique filtration process — one that other filters don't offer.
The three main processes they use are carbon filtration, ultraviolet disinfection, and ozone disinfection. Carbon filtration is used to remove the taste of chemicals and harmful impurities. Ultraviolet disinfection and ozone disinfection kill bacteria, the same ones that Niagara ran afoul of in their plant.
