Coffee grinds improve the soil around roses by fertilizing and enriching it. Roses require a neutral to acidic soil, and adding coffee grinds will help move the soil pH from neutral to acidic. Adding organic material to the soil will also improve drainage and aeration of your soil, which will benefit your roses.
Leftover coffee grounds can be very beneficial to roses when used in moderation. They feed the plants with readily available nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, etc.), lower soil pH, attract worms and improve soil structure.
Coffee grounds can be of great benefit rose bushes when used in moderation, but go sparingly. Fertilising around your roses with an abundance of coffee ground can burn the roots of your roses because of the particularly high nitrogen content.
We recommend a good feed of a nitrogen high feed like “Top Rose Gold” after the late-winter prune in February, then feeding every two weeks throughout the flowering period with a high potash feed like “Tomorite” or "Uncle Tom's Rose Tonic".
Coffee grounds contain compounds that feed healthy soil but they don't lower pH. Eggshells do not prevent blossom end rot. They add organic material for soil organisms, but you may as well just put them in the compost. Epsom salts can be harmful to soil, plants and water.
Coffee grounds should be added to your soil in the early spring when new growth begins and the plant is coming out of rest from winter. This will give the coffee grounds time to break down and be absorbed by the soil and give it the burst of nitrogen that it needs to have a healthy growing season.
In most cases, the grounds are too acidic to be used directly on soil, even for acid-loving plants like blueberries, azaleas and hollies. Coffee grounds inhibit the growth of some plants, including geranium, asparagus fern, Chinese mustard and Italian ryegrass.
Epsom Salt for Roses
Rose growers in particular are strong advocates for using Epsom salts. They claim it not only makes the foliage greener and lusher, but it also produces more canes and more roses.
Mix equal parts of Miracle-Gro® Garden Soil for Roses (or Miracle-Gro® Garden Soil for Flowers) and the soil removed from the planting hole. If planting in a container, use with Miracle-Gro® Potting Mix. Either way, you are helping ensure that roses receive ample nutrition while establishing new roots in the garden.
The roses can take in warm water better than cold water. You can also make your own flower food by using 2 tablespoons (30 mL) of white vinegar and 2 tablespoons (29.6 ml) (30 grams) of sugar for each 32 fluid ounces (950 mL) of water.
Using one cup per week for plants like impatiens, orchids, dieffenbachia, and African violets is a good way to help them grow well. The coffee grounds can also be used as an organic matter. Mix 1 part of coffee ground to 3 parts of garden soil or potting mix for best results.
FOR ESTABLISHED ROSES:
Early to mid-spring: Begin fertilizing when new leaves emerge. Use a high-nitrogen fertilizer or top dress with alfalfa meal (5-1-2) for the first application to jump-start leaf development, along with epsom salts to encourage new cane development and lusher growth.
Banana peels buried around rose bushes help produce strong stems and better blooms. But, the National Garden Bureau warns not to use more than 3 peels per bush at one time. Banana peels are 3.25% phosphorus and 41.75% potash.
Newly planted roses – water every two or three days. Established roses – water once or twice a week as needed to keep the soil moist around your roses.
Roses are among the plants that require a lot of calcium to grow well. Calcium is a secondary nutrient in terms of quantity required for plants, behind just nitrogen and potassium. Eggshells benefit roses by strengthening the cell walls of the plant's tissue, and they are primarily a great source of calcium.
Coffee grounds contain nitrogen which helps roses. Sprinkle some to the base of the rose or add some to a compost pile to help enrich the soil. Beware of adding too much because it will, unfortunately, hurt your roses. Just remember that a little goes a long way.
Irrigate roses deeply but infrequently, applying water directly to soil using soaker hoses or drip irrigation. Water needs vary based on weather and soil, so check soil with your finger. Water often enough to create consistently moist soil – not overly wet, not bone-dry.
Plant your roses in well-drained soil, enriched with organic matter such as compost or farmyard manure. Roses also prefer growing in a soil with a pH level between 6 and 6.5. If your soil is too acidic or too alkaline, you can always raise or lower your soil's pH by using a modifier.
Baking Soda.
Dilute 1 teaspoon to 1 quart of warm, soapy water and spray on your roses' leaves. The baking soda will treat and prevent diseases like black spot, while the soap helps it stick, and is also mildly effective at smothering many insects pests.
Epsom salt can improve the blooms of flowering and green shrubs, especially evergreens, azaleas and rhododendrons. Work in one tablespoon of Ultra Epsom Salt per nine square feet of bush into the soil, over the root zone, which allows the shrubs to absorb the nutritional benefits.
Vinegar is known for its ability to lower soil pH levels. Since roses prefer slightly acidic soil, adding a small amount of vinegar to their water supply may help them thrive. In addition, using diluted white or apple cider vinegar as a spray on your roses can help control common garden pests like aphids.
Don't just pour it down the drain — you can use it to fertilize your plants, both indoor and outdoor. Coffee grounds (and brewed coffee) are a source of nitrogen for plants, producing healthy green growth and strong stems. Coffee also contains calcium and magnesium — both of which are beneficial to plant health.
Since coffee grounds have such a pungent and intense smell, mosquitoes do not like to come near it. Mosquitoes are repulsed by all types of coffee, whether it is fresh, used, or burnt. The most effective way to use coffee grounds for mosquito control is by burning them, as it creates a stronger aroma.
