Screens shall not be installed at the duct termination. Inspectors will see many dryer vents terminate in crawlspaces or attics where they deposit moisture, which can encourage the growth of mold, wood decay, or other material problems.
Do not put a screen on your dryer vent outlet. An integral backdraft damper at the wall/roof cap will keep the critters out. Do you expect a homeowner to crawl on their roof every couple weeks to clear the dryer vent screen?
Dryer exhaust ducts for clothes dryers shall terminate on the outside of the building and shall be equipped with a backdraft damper. Screens shall not be installed at the duct termination. Ducts shall not be connected or installed with sheet metal screws or other fasteners that will obstruct the exhaust flow.
Dryer Vents should never be longer than 35 feet
The 4″ smooth metal pipe between the laundry room and the outside should never be longer than 35′. 5′ should be subtracted from the 35′ number each time a 90-degree elbow is used.
It's vitally important to remove dryer vent screens in order to prevent dryer fires from occurring. These screens should be removed during home inspections. If this is not done the airflow to the dryer will be restricted and will cause issues with your clothes dryer and can ultimately lead to dryer fires.
Option 2 is to drill the 4 holes around the vent, fit Rawl plugs to the holes and then screw the mesh screen into place.

The maximum developed length of a clothes dryer exhaust duct shall not exceed 35 feet from the dryer location to the wall or roof termination.
First things first, unless you will be checking an exterior dryer vent screen regularly, do not use a small mesh screen. These may seem like a good idea to keep insects out but they can get clogged with lint very easily, which creates a fire hazard and requires constant cleaning.
DO NOT terminate dryer vents in crawl spaces or attics. Dryer vents that terminate in crawl spaces or attics allow for moisture to deposit and encourage mold growth and health hazards.
HOW HOT DOES A DRYER VENT GET? When the dryer is operating properly, the maximum temperature of the exhaust shouldn't exceed 200°F. As your dryer heats and dries your clothes, the warm, moist air from your appliance is filtered out from the exterior vent.
You most likely thought covering your air vents would certainly save you energy, but it does the opposite. Considering that this could damage your cooling and heating system, fractures and other damage could allow air to leave your air ducts and cost you much more in energy bills.
Some dryer vent installations also have an external lint trap, which is also known as a secondary dryer lint trap or a 4″ In-Line Dryer Lint Trap.
Cover your dryer vent hole with 1⁄4 in (0.64 cm) hardware cloth. Hardware cloth is a type of sturdy, galvanized wire mesh and 1⁄4 in (0.64 cm) hardware cloth means that it has 1⁄4 in (0.64 cm) openings in the mesh. These spaces are small enough that even tiny critters like mice won't be able to get through the cover.
If your home (or apartment or condo) has a dryer, then yes, it's strongly recommended that you have a dryer vent cover.
It's simple yet effective. As warm, moist air from the dryer is expelled through the vent, the screen acts as a barrier, trapping lint and other debris while allowing the air to pass through freely. This helps to prevent blockages in the vent, which can lead to reduced airflow and increased fire hazards.
Duct joints shall be installed so that the male end of the duct points in the direction of the airflow. Joints should be secured with metal tape (not duct tape).
Dryer vents must be independent of all other systems and must exhaust moisture and combustion products outdoors – not into attics, crawl spaces, basements, chimneys, wall cavities or any interior room. Dryer ducts must be constructed of rigid aluminum or galvanized steel.
Finally, poorly constructed periscopes may not be fully sealed, causing exhaust to leak out and lint clogs to form quickly. If your dryer vent is a good distance from the exhaust port on your dryer, a periscope may be a good choice for you. Just be sure to cover any leaks you may find with plenty of duct tape.
PVC is plastic and not conducive for dryer vents. When lint travels through a PVC pipe, static electricity created by the plastic will pull the lint to the sides. Over times this causes a 4” pipe opening to shrink dramatically. This leads to poor airflow which creates drying exhaust issues.
Depending on the type of system you have and the level of protection you desire, you can install screens on the interior and exterior of vents. Professionals can install these screens to ensure a tight seal. Alternatively, it's easy to install air vent screens yourself.
This mesh is designed for use in foundations and attics, providing insect protection whilst allowing good air ventilation. Shipped as a single piece of mesh in the number of metres specified, or supplied as complete rolls.
Check air bricks are in place and intact. Mice can squeeze through holes no bigger than the diameter of a pencil. If mice can fit through your air bricks then you can prevent this by fitting a wire mesh over them (don't block them!).
