How deep and wide must my house footings be? That depends on the number of stories the house will be. A minimum of 12”inches deep for all footings and the width will be determined by the amount of stories, 12” inches for a single story, 15” inches for a two story and 23” inches for a three story.

According to an example cited on TATA Tiscon site, if a 3-storeyed building rests on sandy soil, it will require minimum 5.5x5. 5 feet to 6x6 feet footing size. Similarly, a 2-storeyed one requires 5x5 feet and single storied will need 4x4 feet footing size.
Max size for a reasonable spread footing is probably in the 20ft range and probably anything under 2'-6" or 3'-0" thick. Anything beyond that, you are probably dealing with a different foundation method.
It is important then to take foundations to a depth that is not affected by changes in available moisture. If there are no trees within 32m, foundations in clay are normally a minimum 1.0m deep. The closer a tree to the building the more that the deepest roots affect the moisture in the clay supporting the building.
Required Footing Sizes
In most cases, a house should have a minimum footing of 12 inches wide by 12 inches deep, with foundations that are 8 to 10 inches thick. This should be enough to support house weight and resist lateral soil and water pressure.
The most common types of footing in residential construction are Isolated and Continuous spread footings. Your first and most important task is to lay the wall's foundation. Mark out the line and position of the wall and then dig out the foundations. Dig a trench (approx. 200mm deep and 300mm wide) where the wall will be.
Your building code specifies that for masonry walls, the footing has to be at least 8" wider than the masonry, so if you are using standard unit masonry, your footing width has to be at least 16 inches.
Width of Footings

Spacing and deck footing size should be properly calculated. and must be spaced and sized accordingly. To figure the deck footing spacing, factor in the size of the footing and beam, as well as the beam's span. In most cases, it's best to space the footings/posts no farther apart than 8 feet in the center.
