Use a Downey Rinse ball but instead Fill it with Lysol or Clorox laundry sanitizer. It will open up in the spin cycle right before the rinse cycle starts. Fabric softener is bad for your clothes and for the machine.
It's completely unnecessary and can even damage fabric over time, especially if too much is used. It can even stain your clothes sometimes. Dryer sheets aren't even necessary. I do like to use lysol laundry sanitizer though, you put it in the spot in the washer for fabric softener.
