Regular Maintenance. Regular maintenance is essential in keeping paint from chipping off wood. It is recommended to periodically clean painted surfaces with a mild detergent and water solution. Avoid using harsh chemicals as they may damage the paint finish.
Use a medium-grit sandpaper (eg, 120 or 150 grit) to sand down the chipped paint areas. Sand slightly beyond the chipped areas to ensure a smooth transition. After removing the chipped paint, lightly sand the entire surface with a fine-grit sandpaper (eg, 220 grit) to ensure proper adhesion for the primer and paint.
The finish will peel if the paint was applied when the moisture content of the wood was too high. This again will happen universally, unless certain parts of the house dried before the finish was applied. It may be worse on areas with full sun exposure. This can peel to bare wood or to the previous finish.
If the flaking occurs in multiple layers of paint, use of filler may be necessary. Prime bare timber areas before repainting. Use of a premium quality primer and topcoat should prevent a recurrence of the problem. Dulux recommends Dulux 1 Step® Acrylic Primer Sealer Undercoat and Dulux Wash&Wear® for walls.
Sun Exposure. The desert sun can be very hard on paint. As it fades, it can become brittle and crack or flake away. If you notice this happening in your home, particularly on any wood on the structure, you may need to replace trim or re-seal the wood to get the paint to cling correctly.
Make sure your wood is dry and stabilized. Surface prep: sand and clean. Use a good primer coat. Then paint what ever color you wish.
Well, an alternative to this drastic action is using a binding primer. A popular choice is Zinsser's Peel Stop, which is a water-based primer that penetrates chalky surfaces and helps to glue-down the edges of cracking and peeling coatings to the substrate so they can be successfully painted over.
The best brands of scratch-resistant paint for wood furniture include Benjamin Moore's Advance, Sherwin-Williams' ProClassic, and Behr's Premium Plus Ultra. These paints offer durability and resistance to scratches, making them ideal for high-traffic areas.
Peel Stop® is a clear, flexible bridging sealer for surfaces where peeling, flaking, dusting or chalking is a problem. Use indoors or out to form a breathable membrane over questionable or faulty substrates. Peel Stop® tightly bonds to old paint and problem areas forming a sound surface for new paint.
Latex Filler for Repairing Chipped Paint. Repair chipped paint by filling the depression with wood putty or latex filler. The product will be flush with the surface or slightly higher than the surface. The area is sanded down smoothly to match the rest of the surface.
Use a primer: Apply a primer specifically designed for wood to enhance paint adhesion and create a stable surface for your artwork. Choose the right paint: Select high-quality acrylic or oil-based paints suitable for wood surfaces.
All out I'd use a knife to cut off the loose paint, then use wood filler or bondo to fill the chips. Sand it down, prime and paint or spray the whole surface. Filling the chips and sanding them is the only way to make them really disappear. And painting the whole surface is the only reliable way to match it.
A resilient, top-notch poly or acrylic coating is recommended for enduring protection against wear and tear.
Peeling from Wood
Occurs when wet wood expands and contracts from moisture and temperature change, causing the paint film to loosen, crack and roll at exposed edges and fall off. Affected surface area can widen and continue to loosen the paint film if left untreated.
Method 1: Use Spray Varnish
First, lay down some old newspapers or anything else to protect surfaces around your work area. Next, hold the can about 12 inches away from the painting and evenly spray the surface. Allow the first coat of sealer to dry completely before applying a second coat.
If this paint is showing any signs of moisture, the best way to prevent further peeling is to apply a water repellent paint over the top. This will protect the paint that is allowing the moisture to enter and ensure you do not have to remove larger amounts of paint later on.
Over time, fluctuating temperatures and humidity levels can make paint peel. For spaces where this is normal like kitchens, using KILZ 3® Premium Primer (known for its exceptional adhesion and durability) before you paint can help ensure your paint job lasts longer.
Peeling paint must be completely removed for a smooth surface. Scrape away loose paint using a putty knife or paint scraper. For larger areas, use a heat gun or paint remover for easier removal. Sand the edges to blend the remaining paint with the exposed surface.

Moisture. One of the main causes of peeling paint is the presence of moisture or water around the paint. This will usually happen when water gets into the wood behind the paint. This separates it from the wall and seeps through the layer of paint.
