There are many reasons why the grout can turn black. One is dirt accumulation, and another is the formation of mold due to excessive humidity and moisture. Both conditions can be prevented with a good and thorough cleaning and scrubbing of the grout.
If you can get on a regular cleaning schedule to scrub the grout and tile, you'll be ahead of the game in stopping black mold from forming in the first place.
Grout will darken when it absorbs water. Even if the grout is sealed, a small bit of water may pool in some areas causing the grout in that area to appear darker on a regular basis. Squeegee the shower after using, otherwise you'll have to pull and replace tile to fix any low spots on the shower floor.
The dark spots on grout are most likely the result of mold, mildew or plain old dirt buildup. It is important to determine what you're dealing with first, so you can wipe it out with the appropriate treatment plan. The only way to tell for sure is to ask a mold professional to collect samples and test it.
To do this, we'd again recommend regularly using a specialist product such as Fila Fuganet Grout Cleaner. Products of this kind are formulated to prevent absorption of stains by grout and because they're often water-based, won't harm your tiles in the process.
It is not necessary to seal any glazed tiles or good quality un-polished porcelain tiles; however, once again we recommend the use of a grout protector if you want to protect the grout to keep it looking its best and to make ongoing maintenance easier.
Remove and Replace Grout
The most thorough and complete solution is to remove the grout and install new, grout in the color of your choice. In small areas, such as backsplashes and tub or shower surrounds, this project can be less difficult than you might imagine.
Baking soda paste
Simply mix together half a cup of baking soda with four teaspoons of water until it forms a spreadable paste. Apply this paste directly to areas of mouldy grout and let it sit for 15 minutes. Finally, scrub the mould away with an old toothbrush and rinse with warm water.
Steam cleaning is one of the most powerful ways to clean grout without the use of harsh chemicals. Professionals often use steam to loosen the dirt and other particles trapped in the grout without needing to scrub manually.
It's important to remember that black grout can be very messy and difficult to clean up. Grout is similar to kinetic sand in texture—it's gritty, and it can go everywhere, even with the most experienced professional. And because there's such a contrast between the tile and grout color-wise, any mistake will stand out.
Make Your Grout Look New
Vinegar and Water Solution: Mix a cup of vinegar with a cup of water. Apply with a sponge or cloth to the grout. After 10 minutes, use a dry towel to wipe off any excess and let dry. Rinse with water.
Technique #2 – How to Stop Grout Bleed
To help stop grout from seeping under your glass, you need to make sure you get your glue all the way to the edges of your glass. But sometimes this doesn't always happen. So a good remedy for that is to use a Weld Bond Wash.
Cleaners that contain bleach or ammonia can even fade the color of your grout, leaving you with an uneven appearance.

Chemical cleaners, such as, Tilex, Soft Scrub, Scrubbing Bubbles, or ammonia products will nearly always result in your tile surfaces' grout becoming very discolored.
The most benign may result from using too much soap and failing to wash it off properly. That leaves a film of dirt and soap, hence the discoloration. But it gets worse. Black grout can also be mold and mildew, which forms where there's moisture or high humidity.
Mix equal parts white vinegar and warm water in a spray bottle. Saturate the grout completely with the vinegar solution, then let it sit for 5–10 minutes. Use a stiff brush (such as a nylon scrub brush) and a bit of elbow grease to start scrubbing the grout's surface.
How it works: Touted as a miracle cleaning paste, The Pink Stuff is easy to apply to grout using a soft cloth or sponge. Simply rub and scrub, and then rinse with hot water. As a mildly abrasive cleaner, the paste has a little grit to it, which helps scrub away dirt and debris from grout and surfaces.
Damp showers produce brown grout even more than other areas
In our showers, dampness further produces grout discoloration. Not only will our cleaning procedures contribute to the penetration of surface contaminants, but the wet environment is a breeding ground for mold and mildew.
This really works! The grouting around the tiles in our kitchen and bathroom was looking very tried with several black damp spots. The grout pen covered it all in one coat and was very simple and quick to use. We added an extra coat on the very stained sections and now it all looks like fresh grouting.
Prepare a one-part bleach and four-part water solution in a spray bottle. Spray the solution on the moldy grout and let it sit for about 30 minutes. Use a rigid toothbrush and do some vigorous scrubbing to make sure you have covered all the areas.
