Reset the Smoke Detector: Sometimes, a smoke detector just needs a good reset to stop the chirping. You can do this by turning off the power at the circuit breaker, removing the detector from the mounting bracket and disconnecting the power supply. Then, press and hold the test button for about 15 seconds.
A single beep about every 30 seconds to a minute can mean the battery is low, the sensors are dirty, or the unit needs to be replaced. Multiple beeps can indicate a malfunction, or if the unit can detect carbon monoxide (CO), high levels of the gas may be present.
Hardwired smoke detectors can still beep even if there is no battery. Possibly the backup battery might have been activated and that can signal a problem. The backup battery may have run out and that is causing your hardwired smoke detector to chirp.
The 9-volt battery smoke detectors are the standard and most common model. With these detectors, you need to replace the batteries about once a year. A 9-volt battery detector can last up to 10 years if you take good care of it. After they reach the 8-year mark, you should consider replacing them.
If your smoke detector is hard-wired, it may still beep even without a battery. This could be because the backup battery has been activated, signalling a problem. If the backup battery has run out, it can cause the hard-wired smoke detector to chirp.
All alarms have a shelf life and may chirp when they've reached their end-of-life. If your alarm is older than 10+ years, it's time for a replacement. Chirping in newer alarms is most commonly caused by a low battery.
The "HUSH" feature has the capability to temporarily desensitize the smoke alarm circuit for approximately 7 minutes. This feature is to be used only when a known alarm condition, such as smoke from cooking, activates the alarm. The smoke alarm is desensitized by pushing the "HUSH" button on the smoke alarm cover.
Silence the Alarm in 3 Steps
Press the hush/silencing button. It will silence the entire interconnected system. The button may also say “test.” It should silence all the alarms immediately unless there's still smoke and debris.
For hardwired smoke detectors, random beeping may result from electrical interference, loose connections, or power fluctuations. Wireless devices, such as Wi-Fi routers or baby monitors, can also disrupt the detector's signal, causing unexpected beeping.
Low Battery or End-of-Life: This type of chirp indicates it is time to replace your smoke alarm's batteries or the smoke alarm itself.
In the rare event that a nuisance alarm does occur, Kidde's Worry-Free Alarms have a hush button feature that will temporarily silence the smoke alarm if a non-emergency condition activates it. Simply push the button on the alarm to temporarily silence the system for about seven minutes.
The beeping sound the low battery alarm makes can become very annoying but can be disconnected by removing the drained battery from your home alarm system panel. Make sure to replace the drained battery with a new one to keep your home alarm system functioning properly.
The same thing may happen to hardwired alarms when you turn on the device's power. If the chirping continues, however, your detector might have a residual charge from the previous battery. Take out the battery, hold down the test button for 15 seconds, and replace the battery.
Dust and debris can easily accumulate inside your hard-wired smoke alarm, causing that incessant chirping sound.
Most coverings will slide off and away from the smoke detector's body. Once open, you can remove the old battery or batteries. Close the battery cover. Check your manual for the smoke detector if you are having trouble locating or removing the battery.
Can I install a hardwired smoke detector myself? While it is technically possible, it is not recommended. Working with your home's electrical system can be dangerous and complex, best left to a qualified electrician.

Testing and Changing Your Smoke Detector Batteries
It is recommended you test your alarms at least once a month to ensure they are working properly, and replace the batteries in your smoke alarm every six months. The detector itself should be replaced at least every ten years.
