Remove the AC power to the home alarm console from the wall directly. Use your console's access key (or another item such as a small screw) to unlock and open the system's backing. Lastly, disconnect at least one of the wires that are attached to the system's main battery, which is blocky and noticeable in most units.
You can call the non-emergency police line. They will break into the home and disable the alarm if no contact with the owners is possible.
To get it to stop sounding you'll need to turn the mains off and pull one of the connectors off the big battery inside the control panel. If the alarm outside is still going they sometimes have their own batteries. It should stop after a set amount of time, usually around 20 mins.
If you have a wireless burglar alarm, it shouldn't cost you anything to remove. That's because you can just unscrew it from the wall yourself. On the other hand, if your burglar alarm is wired in, you'll want a professional to safely disconnect it for you.
Unplug the power or turn it off at the fused spur. The panel battery will eventually die leaving the panel disabled. Alternatively turn off the power and remove the batteries in the panel by unscrewing the cover under the front flap, this way the panel is diabled straight away.
Flip the breaker connected to your system's control box to the off position to disconnect the circuit to which the sirens are wired. Your alarm may sound at this point. Don your insulated rubber gloves and unscrew the faceplate from the control box. Remove the black and red wires feeding into the backup battery pack.
The quickest way to shut off an alarm is to enter your code to the control panel. Most of the security systems we test also have apps through which you can cancel the alarm. In any case, you must know your disarm code. Change your batteries.
Most modern alarm systems are fitted with an automatic cut-off device that will stop the alarm from sounding after 15 minutes, so chances are that if you wait, the alarm will stop on its own.
Reset the home security system
Even though you can turn the alarm off on your home security system without assistance, you cannot reset it on your own. Contacting the security company will allow you to have the system reset, although this may mean creating a new security code or pin number.
Depending on the department's protocols, alarm circumstances, and call volume, the dispatched unit may drive by or investigate your home and property to address the reason for the alarm. If your municipality requires an alarm permit, the police may also try to contact you to confirm the alarm.
Alarm System How to Terminate a Contract
It is within your rights to terminate the contract at any time. To do so, you must simply advise the service provider verbally or in writing, preferably by registered mail.
If it appears to be a false activation, contact the police on their non-emergency number as they may have the owner's contact details on their database. If it is a persistent problem, contact the local council or see the question in Related Information about noisy neighbours.
Once you've verified that there is no intrusion or threat, clean your device and make sure the sensor and magnet are aligned and that they haven't been altered. After you've cleaned and checked the alignment of your door sensors, reset the door sensor and see if the alarm stops.
The problem could be as simple as a low or dead battery in one of your sensors, which can trigger burglar and smoke alarms. Pets could also be the culprit — if your sensors aren't calibrated properly or don't have advanced pet detection features.
For many of our most popular systems, beeping alarms and low battery trouble beeps can be silenced by pressing the [OFF] or [#] buttons from the keypad.
If you subscribe to our smart home security services, you can arm, disarm, or manage your security system from your smartphone using the Guardian app. For quick tips on how to use the app, check out our App in a Snap video series!
Enter 4-digit user code + Press Reset. Your keypad should beep. For batteries older than 15 years, the only way to silence the alarm sounding is to open the front cover up and cut the power to the siren.
