Caulk and Patch Before Painting Make sure you use the correct type of caulk, something that is waterproof and paintable. You may have to wait a few hours or a day to allow the caulk to cure before painting. Make sure to follow the instructions on the side of the tube of caulk.
Primer is used to seal or bond. If the walls are already painted they are sealed. If the walls are not too glossy paint will bond. Use a mildew and water rated paint for your bathroom. Duration is my go to paint.
A high quality, oil based primer, like KILZ, will provide the best results, if applied before the finish coat; this helps control moisture migration thru the paint.
A sealer, or sometimes called primer, is a vital aspect to consider when painting the wall. Sealer is essential when you are painting the interior walls of your home. Regardless of the brand or quality of paint, a sealer coat helps a lot. And it is quite a priority to consider when you are painting the interior walls.
Always caulk before painting, unless it's primer, and then paint over the caulk. The only time caulk should be seen is in a non-painting use, like around a tub or sink or tile.
Prime Before You Begin
Especially if you switch from a darker color to a lighter shade, you'll definitely want to choose a solid primer that can stand up to the test. We recommend either using our air purifying primer or our stain blocking primer if you notice the bathroom tends to get quite dirty.
Most caulks state that they can be painted or sprayed over in 1-2 hours. However, if you aren't in a rush, we'd give the caulk 24 hours to dry. This allows it to dry completely and really fill in the crack. It will also allow you to refill any of the caulked areas that have sunk as they dry.
How Do I Paint Over Painted Walls? If the wall is in good condition and the paints are chemically the same (both latex, for instance), you have a few options when the new paint is the opposite shade of the old paint. You can use a primer to thoroughly cover the old color, then apply 1 or 2 coats of the new paint.
If you have various stains, shellac Bonding primer is the ideal choice. It can be used to cover rough surfaces and old varnish as well as metal and ceramic.
For rooms with high humidity/moisture such as bathrooms and kitchens it is advisable to choose a durable primer, preferably one which contains a biocide that protects the dried coating against fungal degradation, such as Zinsser Bullseye 1-2-3 primer.
Original Kilz Primer allowed more seep through when put in two coats to two different walls in the same area, whereas Zinsser provided superior coverage.
To ensure a mildew resistant primer coat, apply 1 coat of KILZ® Kitchen & Bath Primer (stirring thoroughly before and occasionally during use) to the walls and allow to dry.

Opt for Semi-Gloss or Gloss Finishes
Semi-gloss and gloss finishes are ideal for bathrooms because they offer excellent durability and moisture resistance. These finishes create a smooth surface that repels water to prevent it from seeping into the walls.
KILZ® KITCHEN & BATH Primer is a water-based primer-sealer-stainblocker that is specially designed for residential surfaces in high humidity, moisture and temperature environments such as kitchens, bathrooms, powder rooms and laundry rooms.
Brush on Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 Primer to seal any patches and cover water stains, crayon marks or other marks on the wall that might show through the paint. This premium low-odor, water-based primer-sealer covers stains and marks, seals, and provides a smooth surface for paint.
Epoxy paint is suitable for waterproofing basements and concrete surfaces. Latex paint is easy to apply, quick to dry and offers effective protection against water and moisture. Latex-based waterproof paint is preferred for interior use on the walls and ceilings.
Apply a specialist mould treatment
It can be used in bathrooms, kitchens and areas with high humidity and is safe for internal surfaces such as tiles, wood, plaster and wallpaper. After applying the treatment, leave the walls to dry overnight before sanding and priming.
You probably don't need a primer. If the current wall is smooth, clean and covered with the same type of paint (both are oil-based for example), you can head straight for the paint. You need to fill holes, spackle and sand*, maybe even cut a new piece of drywall in to the existing wall.
If you don't remove the paint that is currently on the wall then the finished look of your decorating project won't be professional. More often than not, when painting over layers of old paint, the new top layer of paint will be bumpy.
While painting over mould may temporarily disguise the problem, paint alone will not kill mould. Instead, the mould will continue to grow underneath the paint until it begins to show through. It may also cause the paint to bubble or flake, ruining the finish. If possible, it's best to remove the mould before painting.
For painting purposes, a quality latex caulk or siliconized latex caulk is the best choice. Sometimes referred to as "painter's caulk", these caulks are ideal for sealing interior windows, doors, and trim, and for filling small cracks and holes in drywall or baseboards.
If you're considering painting over your tile's grout, please don't do it! You'll most likely end up with a re-grouting and possible tile replacement project as a result. Get in touch with us by filling out our form here. We look forward to hearing from you!
The key distinction between caulk and sealant? Elasticity. Caulk is typically made from a mixture of latex and acrylic materials, which make it more rigid and prone to shrinking when cured. A sealant offers superior elasticity and water resistance because it primarily contains silicone.
