Use a spritz of oil A very light spritz of oil will ensure your air fryer fries don't dry out. Some people swear by spraying a little of your go-to cooking oil, like canola, olive or avocado, into the basket and over frozen french fries before air frying.
5.1 Lightly Spraying Oil
This creates a barrier that helps lock in moisture while also promoting a crispy exterior. Even with a focus on healthy eating, a small amount of oil can go a long way in improving the texture and flavor of your air-fried dishes.
In theory, you can cook in the air fryer without using oil, but the resulting food could potentially be dry in texture. I like to use about a tablespoon of oil when cooking in the air fryer, so that these potatoes get nice and golden, with a melt-in-your-mouth texture.
Simply set your air fryer to 350 degrees, then place your leftover fries in a single layer in the fryer basket. Heat them for three to five minutes or until they reach your desired crispiness. Just like with the oven method, make sure you don't crowd the air fryer basket so the fries get nice and crispy.
I wouldn't bother doing potatoes from the raw state, without soaking. It will take about a half an hour and the texture won't be nearly as rewarding. They just don't get very crispy without that cold soak.
Using too much oil, overcrowding the air fryer basket or pulling the fries out before they're ready can lead to poor results. Crisp up soggy fries by evenly distributing the fries into one flat layer in the air fry basket and popping them back into the oven to cook for an additional 3–5 minutes.
Air fryers work best when there's plenty of room between individual items for air to circulate. If anything is stacked up together, air can't get in between, and you'll be left with a soft or undercooked spot where the overlap was.
Using oil
Using oil in an air fryer is perfectly fine and helps the meat to remain moist and come out looking golden brown. However, a little oil in an air fryer does go a long way. With most cuts of pork, simply rubbing some oil into the meat will be all you need. You can use either regular olive oil or a spray oil.
Drain fries and pat dry with a paper towel. Toss with oil and seasonings until all the pieces are evenly coated. Place the potatoes in the air fryer basket and into the preheated fryer. Cook 10 minutes, shake the basket, and continue to cook until golden brown on the outside.
There's moisture naturally found in potatoes, and moisture is drawn to higher concentrations of salt. (This is a process called osmosis.) So, if you put the potatoes in a salt water bath, that will help draw out some of their moisture, resulting in crispier fries.
If you peel your potatoes, they won't be nearly as crispy—the oiled skin gives the delicious crispy bite with these taters. Preheat your air fryer. Placing your potatoes in a preheated 400° air fryer will also help them achieve maximum crispiness in a shorter amount of time.
However, the surface reaches 212°F quickly. The water in the fries evaporates. A light, dry crust is formed with holes that allow water to pass through.
If you already own an air fryer, you'll know just how much of a game-changer they can be. Add an air fryer rack to the equation, however, and you can cook two layers at the same time rather than in multiple batches – which may save you both time and money.
An equal amount of all-purpose flour and cornstarch provides both structure and crunch to the batter. Cornstarch is a go-to ingredient for many fried foods (think crispy chicken wings), and using it to bolster the crisping power of flour resulted in a thinner, crispier, and sturdier (yet still delicate) breading.
Spread the food out in the air fryer basket. Set the machine to 375°F on the “air fry” setting and let it rip for three to five minutes. They reheat with surprising speed, so be sure to check on them after about two minutes and give the basket a shake.
As Food Network explains, adding a little oil to your air-fryer is necessary to keep your foods from drying out and help them reach that golden-brown hue you want (especially in a good fry).
While it may seem like a pain, soaking the potatoes in hot water for 10 minutes prior to cooking them in the air fryer is essential. The water removes excess starch, allowing the fries to be their crispiest.
Do you need to add oil to cook chips in an air fryer? You don't have to add oil, but we do recommend adding a few sprays of olive oil to give it that familiar crunchy texture. If you don't use oil, there's a good chance they'll come out too dry.
When potatoes are cut and exposed to air, they release water and begin to soften. By rinsing them with cold water, you help the cells retain some of their firmness, ensuring a better texture in the final product. Before frying the potatoes, make sure to dry them thoroughly with a paper towel or a clean cloth.
