'You can transform your sofa by layering in new cushions – it's the ultimate easy update,' says Sarah Keady, House Beautiful's style director. 'Mix different texture and fabrics together with accessories to add interest to your sofa and keep it all super tactile. '
Add drapes behind the sofa to soften things up, and add an arched floor lamp to add some more curves to the space. Everything is very rectangular as is. Accessorize with some natural woven materials such as baskets or coffee table decor.
Some couch manufacturers install zippers to access the stuffing in the couch, but some apply the external couch cover onto the couch in one single piece.
Pillows and Blankets:
Adding a visual effect to your dark sofa using overstuffed pillows and thick crocheted blankets is another good choice. Draping the blankets over the arm with bright pillows allow your space, and sofa to stay cozy. The idea of using both of these concepts is to bring solids and patterns together.
Cover with layers
Embrace a more laid-back approach and layer up cushions, rugs and blankets in a variety of shapes and colours. The key to this look is confidence: don't be timid – pile 'em high, so the overall look is deliberately eclectic.
As a general rule, you don't want to place a sofa in front of a door because you don't want to block it, and you don't want people to walk into the back of the sofa.
The Bottom Line
While the couch might seem like a comfortable alternative, regular couch sleeping can lead to many issues, including poor posture, back and leg pain, and bad sleep quality. These issues can be even more pronounced for the elderly and those with physical disabilities.
Other suggestions include putting the cushions on the floor and rolling on them (much like we suggest for breaking in new mattresses), or walking on the cushions. Just make sure if you take the walking route, you do so shoeless, barefoot, or with clean socks.
Add new foam or batting to flattened seat cushions. Sew up holes, touch up worn areas with upholstery paint, or patch bigger sections with fabric scraps. Use leather repair kits to fix scratches, cracks, or fading on leather sofas.
Choose a rug with a unique pattern, shape, or color so that it draws the eye. Add cool pillows to your bed or couch. You may be able to find pillows with interesting quotes, pictures, designs, and textures to add to your room. Shop at furniture stores, thrift stores, and online stores.
With regular use, your sofa's upholstery material will soften and become more flexible, making your sofa, chair or loveseat more comfortable. Keep in mind that the sofas and chairs on the showroom floor have likely been on display for awhile. For example, do you have a favorite old t-shirt?
On 3-seater sofas, 4-6 cushions of varying sizes work best. Layer cushions from large to small, and experiment with differently shaped cushions for a unique look. Remember to stick to the general rule of no more than 2 cushions per 'seat'.
Pile On the Pillows
Toss a few pillows on your couch and chairs, and don't overlook the floor: Overstuffed floor pillows can double as extra seating for guests. Easily update the look of your throw pillows as often as you like with removable pillow covers.
Simply fold your throw in half along its length, draping part over the back and extending down onto the seat, then open the fold where it cascades from the back to the front and fiddle a little until it looks pleasing to the eye.
If you are looking for a sofa with detachable cushions, it is important to note that detachable cushions do experience wear and tear easier and faster than attached cushions do. Since they are not sewn into the frame, they do not have the support of attachable cushions and thus are less durable than attached cushions.
Your couch is likely sagging due to several reasons: the cushions themselves are sagging; the couch springs are loose; or the couch springs have broken off.
After all, the main objective was to protect the furniture; to keep it in pristine condition, free of stains and spoils. This was especially important for struggling families determined to keep their brand new furniture looking new as long as possible.
