On some models, there is an indicator light that shows when the rinse aid is low. On some models, there is a "dip stick" attached to the lid for checking the level of the rinse aid. On some models, you can check to see if there is a rinse agent in the dispenser by pressing the clear center of the fill cap 2 or 3 times.
If the dishwasher isn't releasing rinse agent, you need to just replace the dispenser. Either the dispenser is clogged (which can't be cleaned out), or the mechanical parts are not releasing the rinse agent when it triggers a second time after releasing the detergent.
Rinse aid dispensers are typically located on or next to your dishwasher's detergent dispenser. Just fill the chamber to the maximum level, close it, and start your cycle. The rinse aid automatically dispenses during the final rinse cycle. That's it.

Using the wrong detergent could leave a gritty residue. Remember to only use automatic dishwasher detergents. Always precisely measure detergent before adding it to the load. It's important to consider if your home uses a water softener because softened water requires less detergent than hard water.
White vinegar can be used as a rinse aid in the dishwasher, especially to combat hard water staining. Speaking from personal experience, it's extremely frustrating to run the dishwasher only to open it to dishes that are far from sparkling. Hard water stains leave spots on dishes and can make glasses cloudy.
Vinegar can be used as a temporary fix if you run out of rinse aid, but prolonged use is not recommended. The acidity in vinegar can limit the cleaning power of the detergent and can also lead to premature deterioration of rubber seals and gaskets inside of your dishwasher.
The amount of rinse aid released into the final rinse can be adjusted. The factory setting is at 2 or 3; if you are experiencing drying issues, adjust to the highest setting. If there are rings or calcium (hard water) spots on dishes, try a higher setting.

Add one tablespoon spoon of citric acid powder to one-fourth cup of boiling water. Stir well until all of the powder is dissolved. Add the mixture to the automatic rinse aid dispenser and run the dishwasher cycles as usual.

Also, take the opportunity to inspect the rinse-aid chamber and make sure the cap opens and closes without issue. Add rinse aid to the recommended level to improve the drying process and make sure to open the dishwasher door when the rinse cycle is complete to help leftover moisture evaporate.

Instead of paying a lot of money for that expensive Jet Dry Rinse Agent at the store, you can use distilled white vinegar as a substitute. The purpose of the dishwasher dispenser is to release a tiny amount of rinse product each time the dishwasher is used, primarily to eliminate water spots on glasses.
Not using rinse aid decreases the drying performance of your dishwasher. It might also leave water spots on your dishes, especially if you have hard water.
