Use a paint scraper to remove excess plaster around fittings and borders. Allow the first layer to dry and sand to remove any texture before repeating the same steps for the second layer. Once completely dry, sand the wall down with fine grit paper and you will have smooth walls, ready to be painted or papered.
An uneven wall can be covered with any material that adheres to the surface. For example, plaster on a masonry wall or paint on drywall.
Use wall lining paper
Wall lining paper, or insulation paper as it's sometimes called, is basically the same as hanging wallpaper. You will still need to use adhesive to apply it, but thankfully, you don't have to get the skimming action perfect because the lining paper will mask any imperfections.
Smooth Finish: No one wants bumpy, patchy walls. PVA drywall primer smooths out inconsistencies in texture, making the final result look silky smooth.
I can't speak for all areas of the country, however, in CA, smooth texture walls will almost always bring the higher value.
Wall paints are the best solution if there are any little flaws over the surface of the wall. If there are flaws like spill marks or dust marks which are tough to remove, then painting can be the best way to cover them up.
Textured wallpaper can also remedy uneven walls and disguise cracks, bumps and minor imperfections. But the major advantage of modern textured wallpaper is its diversity. It comes in a huge range of styles, making it versatile enough for every room, including bathrooms and kitchens.
A paint that has high coverage and a thick texture, such as our Claypaint or Lifestyle emulsions, will even out any hairline cracks and slightly bumpy surfaces. Both products can go over a multitude of wall substrates. However, on lime plaster we'd only recommend using Claypaint due to its high level of breathability.
You can paint over the texture using a thick-nap roller or apply wallpaper designed for textured surfaces to give a new look to the walls.
Traditionally, an uneven wall can be corrected by either plastering the wall or, if the wall is particularly irregular, installing plaster boards. Both of these methods will require the skills of an expert, especially if you want a guaranteed professional finish. An alternative method is to install PVC wall panels.
The best option is a latex- or oil-based paint with a low-maintenance sheen that has a satin or semi-gloss sheen rather than a flat matte finish and is reflective enough to draw attention to the finer features of the wall texture. The least glossy texture is flat, which is often referred to as matte.
The cost to skim coat walls and remove the texture is between $300 and $1,200 or $1 to $3 per square foot.
Wall textures have been commonly used to finish interior walls surfaces and to hide imperfections in the drywall. In many cases, this was likely done as a cost-saving option.
Several paint colors and finishes excel at concealing minor wall imperfections, drywall seams, and surface irregularities. Darker shades like deep greens, rich blues, and warm browns naturally absorb light rather than reflect it, making bumps and uneven textures less visible.
Use earthy tones such as brown, green, blue and yellow to incorporate elements from nature like trees, leaves or flowers and create a modern interior wall texture. You can create a bold, graphic effect using contrasting colours or you can create a subtle look by using similar colours creating a tone-on-tone effect.
