Any non-magnetic material can be used to defeat a maglock, such as clear plastic, provided it is easy to over look. Clearly, red electricians tape might not go unnoticed for very long.
These locks work through an electric charge through a magnet. When a key card is used, it breaks the electric cycle disabling the magnet temporarily. You can use a metal object such as a nail, to take the magnetic connection instead of the door, leaving the door unlocked until removed.

Maglocks use a strong, electrically powered electromagnet to hold the door closed. If the power fails, or is interrupted by a fire alarm signal, the magnet loses power and releases the door. During normal use, the door is released by pressing an INSIDE button, with external keypad overrides available.
Most maglocks will also have an anti-residual magnetism facility, which is usually a small "thrusting magnet", designed to repel the magnet from the armature plate when power is removed from the magnet. The door will then open as any residual magnetism is broken.
In the event of a loss of power, your door locking system should provide free egress, through automatically changing the default lock state to open, or with fail safe electrified panic hardware trim. There is no difference between fail safe and fail security locks when it comes to emergency egress.
Reliability During Power Outages
Unlike maglocks, which require a continuous power supply to remain locked, motorized latch retraction can be relied upon during power disruptions.
Dependent on constant power supply: A magnetic lock system is entirely dependent on a constant power supply to maintain the magnetic field which holds the lock in place. In the event of a power outage, the system is compromised and the door will unlock, which could be a security risk.
Fail-safe means that a device will not endanger lives or property when it fails. Fail-secure, also called fail-closed, means that access or data will not fall into the wrong hands in a security failure.
A holding force of 650 lbs. (Figure 1) is typical for most magnetic locks fit for traffic control and they may be easily defeated. However, this is a benefit compared to the use of light duty electric strikes.
Because the mating area of the electromagnet and armature is relatively large, the force created by the magnetic flux is strong enough to keep the door locked even under stress. Typical single door electromagnetic locks are offered in both 600 lbf (2,700 N) and 1,200 lbf (5,300 N) dynamic holding force capacities.

Misalignment of the Lock
Another common problem with maglocks is misalignment, which can cause the lock to bind or not release properly. This can be caused by a poorly installed door frame, a misaligned strike plate, or a warped door.
Additionally, magnets can gradually lose their strength through a process called demagnetisation, where the magnetic domains revert to a more random orientation. This can occur through exposure to strong opposing magnetic fields or by repeated use in certain applications.
