Cut a fiberglass wall patch to 1 in (2.5 cm) bigger than the hole or cut a piece of drywall to the size and shape of the hole. Put the patch over the hole, on the inside wall, and cover it with a thin layer of joint compound.
- For Small Openings: Use duct tape or foil tape to cover the opening from the dryer side. - For Larger Openings: Cut a piece of sheet metal or plywood to fit over the opening. Secure it in place with screws or heavy-duty adhesive. - Optional: For extra insulation, you can caulk around the edges to prevent air leaks.
Fortunately, dryer duct is easy to fix, so repair is likely the best course of action. Open up the drywall enough to access the holes in the duct. For solid duct (1), cover each hole by cutting a square piece of aluminum or sheet metal and securing it with sheet metal screws aluminum HVAC tape.
Use foam sealant on larger gaps around windows, baseboards, and other places where air may leak out. Check your dryer vent to be sure it is not blocked. This will save energy and may prevent a fire. Replace exterior door bottoms and thresholds with ones that have pliable sealing gaskets.
Joints should be secured with metal tape (not duct tape). Do not use rivets or screws in the joints or anywhere else in the duct as these will encourage lint collection.
One way of doing it would be to fill most of the hole with small smashed-up pieces of brick, then mix up some mortar to hold it all in place and cover it. But to be honest, it's far simpler to just use a can of expanding foam filler.
Take a 6-inch piece of tape, place it slightly above one side of the opening, and wrap it around the duct. When you go back to your starting location, slightly overlap the tape and go around the duct again. Continue until the entire HVAC duct hole has been covered.
Fire Safety: Dryer vent covers without functional dampers or made of flammable materials like plastic pose a significant fire hazard. Thousands of house fires each year are caused by lint buildup in dryer vents.
If it's permanent, just remove the pipe and patch the wall/siding using appropriate materials. If it's temporary, you can buy a little bundle of fiberglass insulation. I'd stuff that into the pipe and then use some UL181 tape to tape up the end and/or tape closed the louvers.

Extreme Temperature Resistance
The temperatures in a dryer vent can reach more than 100 degree celsius, making regular tape unsuitable for sealing gaps and joints. However, with a foil tape there is no such problems as it is designed to withstand extremely hot and cold temperatures.
Metal tape can also be used to secure the flexible aluminum duct, too, but clamps make it easier to remove the tubing for cleaning. Aluminum foil duct is inexpensive and relatively easy to work with, but its ribbed walls can trap lint, a potential fire hazard.
A: The tape is flammable and burns very well so I would not recommend it.
Fill any gaps between the outside edge of the vent pipe and wall sheathing and wall cavity with caulking. Place fiberglass insulation in as far as you can without overly compressing it. Use caulking to install the piece of wood to cover the hole and seal any caps between the wood and exterior finish.
Foil Tape
Aluminum-based tape can be purchased at any hardware store. It's rated for use on ducts, unlike cheaper plastic adhesive tape, and is easy to apply. Purchase tape that's heat-rated and has the Underwriters Laboratory (UL) label. Foil tape is a temporary fix for duct leaks.
